Great Bend's girls will get accustomed to playing state-ranked teams by the end of the week. The Panthers (8-4) lost to state-ranked Leavenworth 59-40 and Washburn Rural 71-41 to finish fourth at the Capital Classic Tournament.
TOPEKA – The No. 8-state ranked Washburn Rural's girls achieved its final goal – triggering a running clock with a 30-point lead – to bury the Great Bend Panthers 71-41 for third place in Saturday's Capital Classic Basketball Classic.
The Central Plains Oilers passed their first test with flying colors. The Oiler girls built a 27-point lead and coasted past Wichita Life Prep 53-38 to capture its fourth consecutive Barton Hilltop Basketball Classic.
MOUNDRIDGE 48, ST. JOHN 36 (3rd) – Moundridge's Bethany Stucky scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds to spark the Wildcats past St. John 48-36 in the third-place game in Friday's Barton Hilltop Basketball Classic.
WICHITA - Five Great Bend High School swimmers posted state-qualifying times, a school record three in the 100-backstroke at the Wichita Heights swimming meet. The Panthers finished fourth with 196 points in a meet filled with state-quality swimmers. Last year, the Panthers finished 16th with a similar lineup.
