Research shows hit-and-runs on the rise

More than one hit-and-run crash occurs every minute on U.S. roads, according to new research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Here in Great Bend, two of these crashes over the past year have resulted in fatalities.

Wheat tour

Ninety-five participants from all types of professions, including millers, bakers, producers, traders, government, education and media, took a three-day tour of Kansas wheat fields this past week. The tour is a training course for some and for others it's a way to gauge how the wheat is doing.

Giving back

The Great Bend Tree Board celebrated National Arbor Day on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Park by recognizing the achievements of the community and with the rededication of the newly renovated park in honor of the men who fought in World War I and in the Battle of Meuse-Argonne in Germany.

First Christian Church adds 'Refuge' service

First Christian Church, 5230 Broadway Ave. in Great Bend, is offering a new service called "Refuge" to people that have strayed away from God and have not been to church in some time. The service is designed to help people find their way back.

Wildfire precautions

This is the beginning of wildfire season. With everything being so dry and with high winds predicted for today, people need to be aware, take precautions against starting fires and know what to do in case of an emergency, Barton County Emergency/Risk Management Department Director Amy Miller said.

New look, new feel

The Dillons store on 10th Street in Great Bend celebrated its grand re-opening on Wednesday to showcase a new look and feel of the store along with the celebration of a new Starbucks Coffee Shop inside the store. The celebration included a ribbon cutting, presentation of $16,500 in donations and an ribbon cutting for the $3 million renovation.
