Pawnee County lifts burn ban

The Burn Ban has been lifted for Pawnee County as of 1 p.m. Monday, April 9, Pawnee County Information Officer Joel Davis announced. Burning of appropriate and approved materials is allowed at this time in Pawnee County until further notice.

Barton Planetarium to present full-dome movies through spring semester

Explore the depths of space and the mysteries of the cosmos at the Barton Planetarium which will host several activities this spring. The Planetarium is located in the Science Building on Barton Community College's campus. Enter through the sliding doors on the north side. Admission is free.

5K to benefit Camp Hope

Barton Community College's Community Service Organization and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society will host a 5K walk/run 8 a.m. Sunday, April 29. Registration will be at 7:30 a.m. in the Fine Arts circle drive at Barton. All proceeds will be donated to Camp Hope.

Barton hosts Enrollments Days

Barton Community College is hosting Enrollment Day sessions to prepare incoming students for the upcoming school year. Space is limited. Students can call 620-792-9286 or visit bartonccc.edu/admission/enrollmentdays to sign up. In addition to four dates this month, each month through July offers three or four sessions.

Great Bend and Lyons schools earn Challenge Awards

TOPEKA - The Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force has named 78 schools in 28 Kansas public school districts as recipients of the 2017 Challenge Awards. Recipients included two elementary schools in Great Bend USD 428 and three schools in Lyons USD 405.

BCC trustees to review Larned Corrections programming

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will hear an update on college programming at the Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility when it meets at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Room F-30 at the Fine Arts Building. This is the board's monthly study session. Other items on the agenda are the March financial statement, re-centering of state funding to community colleges and technical schools, Real ID driver's license changes in Kansas, Army deployments, and the board's meeting schedule for Fiscal Year 18-19.

Jack Eldon Elmore 1921 - 2018

ROZEL - Jack Eldon Elmore, 96, passed away April 8, 2018, at his home in Rozel. He was born July 26, 1921, in Rozel, the son of Frank and Viola Ethel Smith Elmore. A lifetime area resident, he was a farmer. He was an avid model Lionel train railroader. He loved his family and was a hard-working farmer.

Hurmely Yvonne “Miss Lee” Elson 1937 - 2018

Hurmely Yvonne "Miss Lee" Elson, 80, passed away April 6, 2018, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, Great Bend, Kan. She was born Oct. 19, 1937, to Fred Frederick William Ludwig and Elizabeth (Goble) Peters. Hurmely married Richard G. Elson Aug. 31, 1957, at Oberlin. He preceded her in death on Feb. 2, 2015. A long-time Great Bend resident, Hurmely was a homemaker, LPN, preschool teacher and a Walmart greeter. She worked at numerous area nursing homes, Berean Christian Preschool and the Great Bend Children's Learning Center.

Marijuana wax lab explosion in rural Great Bend

A structure fire Friday afternoon in rural Great Bend was caused by a butane explosion in what law enforcement officers are calling a clandestine lab manufacturing "marijuana wax," also called BHO or DAB.

ATV pursuit leads to drug arrest

Barton County Sheriff's Office deputies were involved is a pursuit with an all terrain vehicle around 4:45 p.m. on Sunday that led to the arrest of Alex Roth, 25, of Great Bend. He was arrested for traffic violations and drug charges, including possession of methamphetamine, Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir said.
