Elsie Hogan, 100, passed away March 9, 2018, at Evergreen Community of Johnson County, Olathe. She was born August 21, 1917, at Redwing (Barton County), to Joseph and Katherine (Courange) Hickel. Elsie married Marvin Hogan March 29, 1937, at Holyrood. He died November 10, 1988.

Commission to hold Monday morning meeting

The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes a proclamation marking National Public Safety Communications Officers Week, the 2018 striping of county blacktops and the potable water supply for the Barton County Landfill.

‘Science Magic’ coming to BCC Planetarium

Tim Folkerts, director of the Barton Community College Planetarium, will present the free program "Science Magic" at 7 p.m. Monday, April 9, at the Planetarium. Folkerts said he will demonstrate some of the "cool science magic tricks" that he presents at Jack Kilby Science Day. Watch objects float, disappear, change color and otherwise defy expectations, and learn about the science behind the "magic." Many of the tricks demonstrated can be done at home with little or no cost.

Thursday, April 12, is the last day to sign up to attend the market vendors meeting that will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17, at the Great Bend Events Center. Those interested in participating in the Summer Street Stroll Farmers Market, sponsored by the Barton County Health Department and the City of Great Bend, are invited to attend this informational meeting to learn about participation in the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program.

Watson inducted into hall of fame

The West Kansas Chapter of the National Speech and Debate Association proudly announces the induction of Barbara Watson, Great Bend High School speech and debate coach, into the West Kansas NSDA Hall of Fame. This is the highest recognition a speech and debate advisor can achieve in the West Kansas District Honor Society. "This award, which is based on participation in the district, contributions to the district, service to the district, excellence in coaching and competition displays the tremendous dedication, effort and hard work that Mrs. Watson has employed throughout her career," said Megan Hagaman, West Kansas NSDA district chair.

Konza Wind Quintet coming to Lindsborg

LINDSBORG - The Konza Wind Quintet will perform at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 15, at the Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery at 401 North First Street in Lindsborg. The quintet is composed of Karen McLaughlin Large on flute and piccolo, Alyssa Morris on oboe and English horn, Tod Kerstetter on clarinet, Susan Maxwell on bassoon, and Jacqueline Fassler-Kerstetter on horn. The concert is the final performance for the Sandzen Gallery's 2017-2018 chamber music series.
