City Band to perform patriotic concert Thursday

Celebrate the Independence Day holiday with the Great Bend City Band at 8:15 p.m. Thursday, July 5, in the courthouse square. The concert will feature patriotic selections including special narratives with the City Band.

Vester G. “Buck” Beckham 1953 - 2018

GREAT BEND – Vester G. "Buck" Beckham, 64, passed away July 1, 2018, at Hays Medical Center, Hays. He was born on August 4, 1953, to Guymon D. and Julia (Daniel) Beckham in Lindsborg. He married Dixie Gustus on March 8, 1974, in Greensburg, she survives.

Matilda Mary Stejskal 1925 - 2018

LARNED - Matilda (Tillie) Mary Stejskal, 93, passed away June 30, 2018, at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned, Kan. She was born Feb. 1, 1925, in Great Bend, Kan., the daughter of Arthur and Mary Nordman Hagerman. A lifetime area resident, she was a homemaker and farmer.

Cold Civil War may be heating up

Recent developments on the restaurant front are going to put a dent into 'date night' plans for Kellyanne Conway and her husband. If Sarah Huckabee Sanders can't eat in peace with her Never Trump parents in some central Virginia one-horse town, there's no way Conway can have a sit-down dinner anywhere in D.C. or Northern Virginia and the drive-through may be out of the question, too.

Mind Sculpt Games to host coffee

Postemergence marestail and pigweed control in soybean fields

Controlling marestail or pigweeds postemergence in soybeans is always easier when the weeds are small – less than 2 inches tall is preferable for good control. Once weeds get taller, they are often considerably more difficult to control. However, conditions are not always conducive to getting optimal postemergence weed control. The wet weather in many areas this spring may cause weeds in some fields to get larger than you intended. The following are some suggestions for controlling these weeds postemergence in soybeans.
