Fashion leads to fair with 2017 Revue

A precursor to the Barton County Fair each year is the 4-H Clothing, Fiber Arts & Fashion Revue. Wednesday morning, 4-Hers from area clubs arrived early at Trinity Lutheran Church to undergo judging for garment construction and buymanship outfits, and to get feedback on their workmanship in the fiber arts. Some of the top winners will go on to compete this fall at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson, said Barton County Extension Agent Bernie Unruh.

Hoisington upholds fireworks ordinance

HOISINGTON - Hoisington City Council members had two weeks to review the city's fireworks ordinance following a discussion at the June 12 meeting. When they met again Monday night, fireworks were once again on the agenda, and the council unanimously agreed to uphold the ordinance that allows the discharge of fireworks in the city on one day only, July 4, from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Building the dream

Last week, the Central Kansas Dream Center made significant progress on the renovation of the third floor of their building. A pump truck arrived and began pumping cement up a long hose, and workers began spreading and filling the floor to level it prior to framing new living spaces.

GBHS grad, Mull, making name in video

Aaron Mull, a 2012 Great Bend High School graduate, is beginning to make a name for himself in the world of internet video. This Wednesday night, June 29, a small clip of a 2013 video he made and posted will be shown on the MTV show "Catfish," for a special showcasing the makers' favorite parodies of their show.

Trip on a Tankful

CONCORDIA - Drive East on I-70 to Salina, and go north on US-81, the scenery is gently rolling hills and not much else for the next 45 minutes until finally, you reach Concordia, KS. Be sure to bring your walking shoes, because there is so much to see and do downtown, and it is such an attractive little town, it's hard to not want to walk just one more block. Here, we highlight the must-see's, and all are just within a few blocks of each other.

Ellinwood historians tapped for 2017 After Harvest Festival Parade Grand Marshalls

ELLINWOOD - Every year, the Ellinwood Rotary Club solicits nominations of a citizen or citizens who have demonstrated a keen sense of community spirit to be the Grand Marshal or Marshals of the After Harvest Parade. This year, club members selected Joe and Joyce Schulte from among the nominations.

IT'S ON! Wheat harvest in Barton County

Wednesday evening, people could see the familiar dust cloud of a harvester cutting wheat near the Great Bend Municipal Airport on West Barton County Road. It was a welcome sight after a brief but windy rainstorm blew through Tuesday night, threatening hail. More chance of rain was in the forecast for Thursday night.

Residents speak up about fireworks

HOISINGTON - Patrons attending the Hoisington City Council meeting Monday asked council members for some answers. They wanted to know what if anything the council had in mind concerning applications for block parties for the upcoming Fourth of July holiday. They also wanted to know how long the council was prepared to allow the noise to go on this year.

Library director shares HVAC ups and downs

It takes a while to learn how to use new technology. This is something Great Bend Public Library Director Harry Willems has learned the hard way. He shared his story with members of his Board of Directors at their monthly meeting Monday afternoon.

Debbie Stevens Week proclaimed

HOISINGTON - The tour of the utility billing office on the agenda for Monday night's Hoisington City Council meeting was canceled to make time for a last-minute agenda item. Mayor Clayton Williams had a proclamation to make, honoring Hoisington citizen Debbie Stevens, who two years ago created GPS Kids Club, and has a long history of caring for and about Hoisington's children.

Relay for Life celebrates fighters, remembers survivors

HOISINGTON - When cancer survivors and their caregivers line up for the Survivors' Lap at Relay for Life, it's hard not to be overcome by emotion, standing on the sidelines, clapping for those who have battled this disease and won. The sheer number of faces recognized can be overwhelming, with the realization how many people's lives are touched by cancer. As the survivors pass by, clapping and celebrating to the upbeat music, the memories of all those lost over the years surfaces, too.

Larned's Santa Fe Trail Days gets rolling

LARNED - Saturday morning, Broadway and Main filled with families and people of all ages out for a good time as the 2017 Santa Fe Trail Days parade and festivities began. At noon, crowds of people migrated towards what Larned residents affectionately call "sled hill," where the United Way of Central Kansas and the City of Larned prepared a plastic sluice where soon, a flotilla of over 700 ducks would soon float. The top 10 winners would walk away with cash prizes, and the rest, well, the loss would roll off them like water off a duck's back.
