Growing good kids

HOISINGTON - Beginning in the 2016-2017 school year, Hoisington Middle School science and language arts teacher Karissa Cowan began raising funds for a unique project following her participation in a space agriculture seminar over a four-week period the summer before at the Cosmosphere at Hutchinson. There, she learned about hydroponics and dreamed about how she could take back what she learned and incorporate it into her class curriculum.

Hoisington City Council prepares to talk budget

HOISINGTON - Every year, the City of Hoisington collects a list of priorities from each council member in order to determine where the city needs to focus its efforts and its dollars in advance of preparing the budget for the coming year. Hoisington Council gives nod to dog park grant

HOISINGTON - A suggestion made nearly three years ago to open a dog park in the city of Hoisington hasn't been forgotten. Monday night, the Hoisington City Council took a significant step toward making the dream a reality when it approved allowing the city to apply for a $25,000 grant to be applied toward fencing and amenities for a dog park similar to those in neighboring cities.

Meet the newest educator at KWEC

BARTON COUNTY - Mandy Kern is the new programming specialist at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center. Her official start was June 4. She replaces Jean Aycock, who recently accepted a position with the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science.

Another Bailey

ELLINWOOD - Ellinwood Police Sgt. Chance Bailey attended the Ellinwood City Council meeting on June 12, where, following a 10 minute executive session, he was recommended to fill the open position of Police Chief by Mayor Irlan Fullbright. All council members affirmed this recommendation with a motion that was subsequently passed, making him the second Bailey in Barton County currently to fill the top law enforcement spot. His father, David Bailey, was promoted to Great Bend Police Chief in December, 2017.

STEPHENS TO STAND TRIAL

After four hours of preliminary hearing testimony in Barton County District Court Tuesday, 20th Judicial Magistrate Judge Richard E. Burgess Jr. ruled Chaz Stephens, Hoisington, will stand trial for the March 18 death of 2-year-old Hoisington girl Iviona MaRae May Lewis.

ELLINWOOD - Ellinwood's 2018 After Harvest Festival Parade theme this year will be "Celebrating people, petroleum, and progress," according to Rosie Joiner, member of the Ellinwood Rotary Club, which sponsors the parade. She also announced the club's selection for the Parade grand marshal is long time Ellinwood school nurse Ruth Corbett, now retired.
