Vehicle registration snafu uncovered

Claflin Police Chief Gary Vaughan was approached last week by a Claflin man who lent his vehicle to a friend. The friend was stopped by a Kansas Highway Patrol officer and ticketed for illegal registration on his 2002 Toyota Sequoia.

GOOD CLEAN FUN

Saturday morning, as 17th Ave. East of McKinley began to fill up with floats and other parade entries, families made their way to the parade route on the South side of Vets Park. They were there for the first ever Party in the Park Wet-Dry parade. The route was divided in two at the railroad tracks just west of the lake, with dry spectators lining up to the East, and wet spectators to the West.

Pawnee Rock holds hearings on tornado damaged homes

PAWNEE ROCK - The aftermath of the May 16 tornado that passed through the southwestern Barton County town of Pawnee Rock left seven properties more than 50 percent destroyed.

County Attorney files charge against Bruce

HOISINGTON - On Saturday, July 29, Robert Bruce turned himself in to the Barton County Sheriff's Office after he learned the Barton County Attorney had filed a warrant for his arrest on Monday, July 24. He was booked on a charge of criminal threat, and was released after bail was posted. He contacted The Great Bend Tribune by phone on Sunday.

Hoisington Mayor proclaims Shrine Bowl Week

HOISINGTON - With three band members and one football player from Hoisington High School selected to participate in the upcoming 2017 Shrine Bowl and Shrine Bowl Masonic Marching Band, Mayor Clayton Williamson took the opportunity Monday night to issue a proclamation designating July 24-29 as Shrine Bowl Week in Hoisington. The 2017 Shrine Bowl will be played at Veterans Stadium at Butler Community College on July 29.

Library law change has CKLS turning to commissioners

Thanks to the recent passage of HB 2102, which went into effect July 1, the governor will no longer be called on to appoint members to the state's seven library systems boards. That job will now fall to county commissioners around the state.

Movie in the Park and Special Summer Farmers Market Thursday night

Everyone is invited to attend a Special Farmers Market Thursday evening, at the Summer Street Stroll Farmers Market at Jack Kilby Square. Then, when the sun goes down, visitors are invited to attend "The Little Mermaid" Movie in the Park, which is part of Great Bend's Summer Street Stroll Thursday night lineup. Visitors and vendors alike are encouraged to dress in tropical wear, and tropical music will help set the mood.

GBPL Board to help fund Dolly Parton Imagination Library

When the Great Bend Public Library learned it was one of six community organizations to receive annual support from the Don and Phyllis Whelan Endowment Fund, the Board of Trustees began exploring ideas to carry out the wishes of the Whelans. Monday night, they made plans to begin spending the first installment of $6,769, presented to them in March by the Golden Belt Community Foundation.

Larned City Manager declares bankruptcy

LARNED - Mayor William Nusser spoke to The Great Bend Tribune on Monday, confirming the Larned City Council was aware of a bankruptcy filing last week by the new city manager, Bradley Eilts and his wife. The disclosed liabilities amounted to more than $387,000.

Beautiful day for a parade

ELLINWOOD - Early Saturday morning, residents of Ellinwood began trickling onto Main Street, setting out blankets and lawn chairs in preparation for a tradition 44 years in the making. One family even set up not one, but two pools in their front yard in order to cool off as temperatures began to become sultry.
