Hoisington City Council approves nominee for fire district board

HOISINGTON - Four Hoisington community members sent letters to the city recommending themselves to be appointed to the board of directors for the proposed fire district that Barton County Commissioners are expected to approve following the May 14 public hearing that will take place at 9 a.m. in the commission chambers. In a mailing prior to the meeting, City Manager Jonathan Mitchell shared the letters from Councilman Robert Bruce, retired firefighter Shannon Donovan, EMS Director Scott Fleming, and retired fire chief James Sekavec. Taking back her strength

Denise Rankin has learned a lot about taking her voice back in the past two years. It started two years ago when she learned about the abuse her ex-husband, Jeffrey Allen Rankin, had inflicted on their two children. Rankin gets maximum sentence

In Barton County District Court Tuesday afternoon, Jeffrey Allen Rankin received the maximum sentence on two counts of sexual exploitation of a child. Judge Richard Smith sentenced Rankin to 10 years and eight months (128 months) in prison on one charge and 34 months on the second, with the two running consecutively, for a total of 13 and a half years.

Ellinwood city council approves Splash Pad addition

ELLINWOOD - At the Ellinwood City Council meeting in April, a representative from the Ellinwood Rotary Club, Rosie Joiner, shared specifications for a covered patio the club has proposed building adjacent to the Splash Pad. The club led a successful drive for funding to have the outdoor water play area built last year, which included winning a grant from the Golden Belt Community Foundation, which put them over the top of their goal. Some of those funds are still available.

Ellinwood City Council approves building permit

ELLINWOOD - Soon, Ellinwood's Main Street will feature an new structure that may just be the wave of the future. Rachel Ringering, Ellinwood stylist, attended the March city council meeting with her contractor, Colter Dent to request a building permit for the salon she hoped to open this year in Ellinwood. The council request she return in April with updated imagery and additional details. They passed out the updated proposal to council members at the start of Tuesday night's meeting, prepared to answer questions.

Clara Barton ‘Steps for SIDS’ walk-a-thon

HOISINGTON - Tuesday afternoon was beautiful walking weather, and Clara Barton Hospital's Steps for SIDS Walk-a-thon was clearly the winner in the weather lottery. Community members, including a number of teachers and staff from the USD 431 schools, enjoyed yard games and walking around the newly paved perimeter of Clara Barton Hospital. They were there in support of the Burkey family of Hoisington, who have turned a tragic experience seven years ago into an ongoing opportunity to share about ways to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Kloos supports Kansans Can initiative
