Catapults capture imaginations of teens

At the Great Bend Public Library basement Tuesday afternoon, teens made miniature catapults out of wooden craft sticks and rubber bands. It was one of the "Spark a Reaction" weekly teen activities planned in conjunction with the library's summer reading program led by librarian Jennifer King.

GBFD determines structure fire electrical

Great Bend Police and Fire responded to a structure fire Tuesday morning. The 8:51 a.m. fire occurred at 1108 Morton St. Neighbor Dave Welch, 1114 Morton St., arrived home and smelled smoke and investigated. He saw smoke pouring out of the rear of the adjacent house and contacted authorities. No people were home at the time, but a small dog escaped the fire, according to Great Bend Police.

KSBE Cauble hears the good and the bad from patrons

Sally Cauble, District 5 board member of the Kansas State Board of Education, visited Great Bend June 5. She and Superintendent Tom Vernon led a focus group meeting at which the public was invited to weigh in on what qualities they felt the next Commissioner of Education should possess.

At Monday's USD 428 BOE meeting, board member Dwight Young presented retiring Superintendent Tom Vernon with a plaque recognizing him for his years of service.

Like a sequel to the award winning children's story, "Make Way for Ducklings," residents of one Great Bend neighborhood took part in a duck tale of their own over Memorial Day weekend.

Unusual Strawberry

The great part about living in a community like Great Bend is the friendliness of neighbors. Virgil Kober, Great Bend, stopped in to the Tribune office Tuesday afternoon to share some homegrown strawberries with us and show off this unusual looking specimen. This is the second year he's been growing this particular strawberry patch at 126 Kiowa Road, he said. We can state for a fact the berries had good flavor and were juicy. Virgil planned to share the odd one with his wife.

BUBBLES BUBBLES AND MORE BUBBLES

Tuesday afternoon, preschoolers from Helping Hands Preschool walked to the Great Bend Public Library to visit Children's Librarian Amanda Moran-Jones to hear stories about bubbles. As a special treat, Amanda invited the kids to blow bubbles on the library lawn.

Kansas State Board of Education focuses on new Commissioner search

Great Bend will host one of three district focus groups on June 5 at 7 p.m. at USD 428 District Office at 201 S. Patton Rd. District 5 Board Vice-Chair Sally Cauble will lead focus groups in order to gather constituent feedback as to what they believe to be the most critical educational issues in Kansas, and the experiences and skills they feel are essential forthe next Kansas Commissioner of Education. The meeting is open and educators, parents and interested patrons are encouraged to attend.

Pocketing Love and Concern

Members of Central Kansas Threadbenders Quilt Guild spent Tuesday cutting, piecing and stitching together another batch of small quilts destined to be used by Great Bend youngsters, making the transition from home to school a more loving and caring experience.
