Tribune attends KPA day at Capitol

TOPEKA - The Kansas Press Association Day at the Legislature fell on Thursday. Organized by KPA leadership, it provides newspaper editors and publishers an opportunity to travel to Topeka, network with, and meet en masse with legislators. Thursday, Great Bend Tribune Publisher Mary Hoisington and Managing Editor Dale Hogg were among the 50 members in attendance.

When Jadisyn Andrasek, 8, overheard her grandmother talking to a friend about the Box of Love promotion sponsored by the United Way of Central Kansas, she wanted to help. She thought for a moment, and decided she could share a nice Valentine note to be put in each of the packages. Using the pages from the friend's heart-shaped notepad, Jadisyn went to work on the project, and wrote 80 Valentine's greetings. She also attached a sweet treat to each one. 2017 Miss Barton County and Miss Golden Belt pageant features nine

Saturday night marked the fifth in an annual tradition that is bringing back an appreciation for talent, fitness and style of young women in the Golden Belt area. The 2017 Miss Barton County and Miss Golden Belt Scholarship Pageant was held at the Great Bend High School auditorium, and features four contestants for Miss Barton county, and five for Miss Golden Belt.

Editor's note: At the start of the 2016-2017 school year, we met all five Ellinwood High School exchange students when Sen. Jerry Moran visited the school. That first visit, we saw Nazar Kayumov perform a simple card trick in the hallway as he assisted other students tacking up posters for an upcoming event. Clearly, his talent was already known by his peers. Later, Nazar was a guest of the Ellinwood Rotary Club, and there he performed several magic tricks, which left that group of Ellinwood professionals both flummoxed and delighted. When communication grinds to a halt, it's hard to keep an open mind

It's the first week into a new administration, and while the news has been filled with images of protestors marching in the streets, the urges of others to keep an open mind and give the new president a chance have also been notable.

Hoisington CDBG Survey starting soon

HOISINGTON - City staff last week attended training for administering surveys in order for the city to challenge key Census results. The existing Census results indicate a high percentage of residents are above an income threshold required to qualify for needed Community Development Block Grants that can bring significant dollars into the community. But with recent downturns in the economy, the City feels these results are inaccurate, and are standing in the way of acquiring funding to complete needed infrastructure projects.

Ellinwood considering bond to fix flooding, streets

ELLINWOOD - Spring is right around the corner, and that means rain. At the Jan. 10 Ellinwood City Council meeting, City Manager Chris Komarek initiated a discussion concerning how the city would fund ongoing efforts to improve drainage to mitigate flooding that could result under certain conditions.

Traveling exhibit, K is for Kansas, on display at Ellinwood library

ELLINWOOD - An exhibit that opened at the Ellinwood School and Public Library last week has been a draw for young and old alike. The "K is for Kansas" travelling exhibit opened earlier this month, courtesy of the Kauffman Museum, and will be on display until Feb. 11.
