Education finance bill doesn’t add up

The Governor's promise during the 2012 election campaign to provide funding for all-day kindergarten statewide is now set aside. The legislature has the more pressing problem of finding a way to more equitably fund schools. They've come up with ideas both parties could agree upon, but how they solve the problem at hand isn't immediately apparent.

EDC competition team takes home honors

For four years, dance instructor Lindsay Feil, owner of Euphoria Dance Center in Great Bend, has seen continuous growth, both in the size and ability, of the EDC competition dance team. Last weekend, March 29 and 30, the team entered a record number of events at the V.I.P. Dance competition at Maize High School. Categories included solos, duos and trios, small group, large group, and line in contemporary, jazz, lyrical, tap, hip hop and musical theater styles.

Legislature works to produce education finance plan

The Kansas Legislature passed two bills for Education Finance last week, and were hard at work Saturday negotiating to reach an agreement Saturday. An evening vote was anticipated, but as the House and Senate adjourned Saturday night, no word was forthcoming.

Great Bend voters say yes to sales tax

Voters trickled out for local elections Tuesday, with only 1,336 checking in at polls county wide. The general election was for city council positions in the cities of Great Bend, Hoisington, and Ellinwood, and to elect two positions for the Ellinwood Hospital District Board of Trustees.

Jaws of Life called for three vehicle accident

Great Bend police were called to the scene of a three vehicle injury accident that occurred around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of 18th St. and Main St. in Great Bend. The Great Bend Fire Department was called to extract a passenger.

James Haffner, a Hoxie artist, wasn't exactly seeking to become a glassblower. But thanks to the help of master artists and teachers at the University of California at San Diego's craft center, Haffner is not only making a name for himself, he's giving back in a big way. From now through March 23, his work can be viewed at The Deines Cultural Center's exhibit, "Veteran Arts: Custom Glassblowing by James Haffner".

Governor Brownback to comment on Gannon decision Friday afternoon

The Kansas Supreme Court announced Friday morning their decision on Gannon v. State of Kansas. The lawsuit was originally filed in 2010 by parents and school districts after the state cut funding to schools back to 2005 levels of funding. Kansas Governor Sam Brownback and Attorney General Derek Schmidt will hold a press conference at 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon to discuss the Kansas Supreme Court's ruling on the Gannon vs. State of Kansas, The lawsuit asserted lack of adequate funding for education in the state was unconstitutional.
