Edna I. (Craig) Logan Francis, 1913-2013

Edna I. (Craig) Logan Francis, 99, formerly of Claflin, died Friday, May 17 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born Nov. 5, 1913 near Caldwell, she was the daughter of Homer Francis and Katie Elmira (Siebenthaler) Craig.

TLC Twisters bring comfort to shelter dogs

The TLC Twisters 4-H club at TLC Discoveries built eight dog beds which they presented to the Golden Belt Humane Society last week. The beds, made of donated PVC pipe and nylon material, will provide a place for puppies and smaller dogs to relax off the cement floor. They are easily hosed off, and are quick drying, making them ideal for a kennel environment.

Spring and music in the air

The Panther Jazz Band pumped up the audience at the GBHS Panther Bands Spring Contest Concert Monday night with their opening rendition of Watermelon Man by Herbie Hancock. It was a night to celebrate the accomplishments of the high school music program and a select group of accomplished musicians who competed at the state level earlier this spring. Senior band members also recognized and thanked their parents for the support offered through the years of their young music careers.

More sleep time? USD 428 gives a nod

High schoolers may get a few extra zs next year thanks to a proposal approved at the USD 428 board meeting Monday night. But not for teachers. Board members approved a series of late starts for the high school during the 2013-2014 school year that would give teachers the time they need to collaborate, but take away two hours of student contact time a month

Letting the dogs out

Saturday morning, leashes will be rattling and tails will be wagging all over the Great Bend area. Pooches will bound out the door and into the car as their owners make their way to Veterans Memorial Dog Park for the first ever Bark for Life Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event, sponsored by local Relay for Life teams, precedes the annual event coming up on June 7.

Refresher on health care highlights Chamber luncheon

Mike Minton with Benefit Management Inc. was the keynote speaker at the Great Bend Area Chamber of Commerce roundtable for human resources professionals Tuesday noon at The Page. He provided a refresher on the Health Care Reform and Affordable Care Act. While there were tips and updates for owners of large companies, only general advice could be offered for small business owners, as the federal government continues to grapple with a lot of unanswered questions, he said.

No injuries reported at rollover crash

Great Bend police responded to a rollover accident at the intersection of Morphy and 16th Street in Great Bend Thursday afternoon at about 3 p.m. A Pontiac Firebird was travelling southbound on Morphy street when it was struck by a Mercury Mountaineer heading westbound on 16th Street. According to Great Bend Police Lt. Bill Browne, the driver of the Mountaineer failed to yield right of way at the uncontrolled intersection. No injuries were reported and all parties refused treatment. Names were not available at press time.

Deer and turkey hunting a possiblity for Quivira plan

Officials with the National Wildlife Refuge System met with the public Monday evening at the Stafford Senior Center in Stafford to present three proposed options for a 15 year plan for managing the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge.

Change on the menu

Students at Park Elementary school Friday voted for their favorite among 11 menu proposals as offered by Eric Dowson's sixth grade class. For the past three weeks, the class has been studying the progressive era of the late 1890s to the early 1920s in American History. The period was marked by an increase in social activism, with sweeping changes brought forth such as the women suffrage movement and prohibition to name a few.

Hoisington rewards good handwriting

Last Friday, Jan. 23, Hoisington Middle School students recognized National Handwriting Day by competing in a handwriting contest. Teachers Karisa Kaiser and Shari Blase collected samples from students, and also awarded a prize to the student that could guess the highest number of teacher handwriting samples.

Unsafe properties focus of Hoisington City Council

The Hoisington City Council met Monday night and finally approved a resolution to approve the option to purchase real-estate between the city and Housing Opportunities Inc. for $21,500. The approval had been held up because of legal concerns over wording of the agreement which have since been worked out between the parties. This paves the way for additional duplex units to be constructed in Hoisington. The council also approved an option and sale contract to purchase property located at 309 E. Fifth for use by the city. A lien that had previously held up this agreement has been resolved.
