Old school desk crowning touch on old school project car

On any given Summer weekend, Kansas is ripe with opportunities to get your fix of top-notch examples of classic cars like Ford Model Ts, Plymouth Belvederes, Dodge Chargers, Thunderbirds, and Pontiac GTOs, Bonnevilles and more. And while the cars themselves are testaments to the tender loving care of their owners, each car comes with its own unique story. Saturday morning, Great Bend was the place, featuring Barton County Historical Society's annual Rolling Sculpture car show. Al Denning was on hand to share the story of his Ford UK Anglia with enthusiasts.

Rep. Marshall wraps up farm bill listening tour

Editorial note: The 2018 Farm Bill, as every other before it, is a complicated and bulky piece of legislation. It affects every person in America who eats. Because of this, the Great Bend Tribune travelled to Haven for this last of ten stops US Rep Roger Marshall made as he sought feedback from constituents of the Big First. To do the topic justice, throughout the week, we will spotlight some of the insights and concerns shared Saturday morning by the people who attended Marshall's 2018 Farm Bill Listening Tour.

USD 431 adopts 2018-2019 budget

HOISINGTON - The Unified School District 431 Board of Education convened a special meeting Monday night in order to hold the 2018 budget hearing. No members of the public were present, so the hearing went quickly. Also, following an executive session at the end of the meeting, the board approved a motion to eliminate coaching duties for Kyle Jeffrey. No explanation for this action was provided. Jeffrey is the special services teacher at Hoisington Middle School, and he coached middle school girls basketball and middle school track.

Eyeing the sky

Eclipse viewing glasses were a hot commodity in Great Bend Monday morning. Those looking for a pair began arriving as early as 8 a.m. at the Great Bend Public Library where it had been announced there would be an eclipse viewing party mid-day. While the wait continued until 11:30 a.m., and the line grew to nearly a block-long on the Forest Ave. side of the library, most who waited were not disappointed.

U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts attends Great Bend Chamber Coffee

When he's home in Kansas, U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts makes a point of expressing his fondness for long-time friends, and Thursday morning's visit to First Kansas Bank in Great Bend was no exception. A larger-than-normal crowd gathered at the weekly coffee hour organized by the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce. Roberts, who chairs the Senate Agriculture Committee, spoke about his optimism for a timely completion of the 2018 Farm Bill. He also took a few moments to remember a past Great Bend mayor, Robert Parrish, and to share an anecdote about Barton County Commissioner Homer Kruckenberg.

Meet the Panthers happening Sunday

The Great Bend High School Booster Club will sponsor the second annual Meet the Panthers event, starting at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 20 at Jack Kilby Square. All Great Bend High School coaches will be on hand to introduce themselves to the community. The Booster Club will provide free hot dogs, chips, and bottled water, and slideshows featuring highlights from the 2016 sports programs from every season will be on display. The public is invited to come and enjoy this opportunity to support our hometown athletes.

Weekend accident claims Stafford Co. official

STAFFORD - A current Stafford County Commissioner, Shane Stimatze, was found dead at his home in rural Stafford County on Monday from an apparent accident that occurred sometime over the weekend.

Vehicle registration snafu uncovered

Claflin Police Chief Gary Vaughan was approached last week by a Claflin man who lent his vehicle to a friend. The friend was stopped by a Kansas Highway Patrol officer and ticketed for illegal registration on his 2002 Toyota Sequoia.

GOOD CLEAN FUN

Saturday morning, as 17th Ave. East of McKinley began to fill up with floats and other parade entries, families made their way to the parade route on the South side of Vets Park. They were there for the first ever Party in the Park Wet-Dry parade. The route was divided in two at the railroad tracks just west of the lake, with dry spectators lining up to the East, and wet spectators to the West.

Pawnee Rock holds hearings on tornado damaged homes

PAWNEE ROCK - The aftermath of the May 16 tornado that passed through the southwestern Barton County town of Pawnee Rock left seven properties more than 50 percent destroyed.

HOISINGTON - Tuesday morning marked the second day of a community playground build at Hoisington's new Lincoln Elementary School. While USD 431 will save $15,000 in labor, the real winners are the people pitching in, excited to take part in this once-in-a-lifetime experience that will mark the beginning of a new chapter in the educational history of their town.

County Attorney files charge against Bruce

HOISINGTON - On Saturday, July 29, Robert Bruce turned himself in to the Barton County Sheriff's Office after he learned the Barton County Attorney had filed a warrant for his arrest on Monday, July 24. He was booked on a charge of criminal threat, and was released after bail was posted. He contacted The Great Bend Tribune by phone on Sunday.
