Home for the Holidays

The annual Home for the Holidays festival and parade marked the beginning of another Christmas season in Great Bend Saturday night. The parade line-up at Brit Spaugh park swelled with several creative floats late afternoon for the parade that started at 5:30 p.m. It was followed by the Mayor's Christmas Tree Lighting and Trail of Lights at 6:15 p.m. Attendees took their pick of many free activities including ice skating, horse drawn carriage rides, and free food including hot dogs, funnel cakes and hot chocolate. Santa made an appearance too.

Ellinwood City Council hears good and not so good news

ELLINWOOD - City Manager Chris Komarek had some good news to report about the bond issue the city passed recently that will fund needed street and ditch repairs, making the city less vulnerable to flooding when the spring rains return. But, he let Greg Vahrenberg of Piper Jaffray tell the whole story. Vahernberg was contacted by telephone and conferenced into the meeting. He shared how Ellinwood had fared earlier that morning when bids for the city's bond issue were opened.

Claflin speeding concern discussed

CLAFLIN - City council members met briefly Monday night with a short agenda that included a discussion about participation in an imaging project with the Barton County Mapping Office and reports of speeding by the high school.

Veterans honored at Avenue of Flags

Despite the cold and misty weather, community members began to gather at Veterans Memorial Park in Great Bend Saturday morning for the annual Veteran's Day Memorial Service at the Avenue of Flags. Members of the various veterans service organizations in the area assembled for the presentation of colors as buses transporting the Great Bend High School marching band arrived. A proud father spoke of his son who would present Taps that day. Young children bundled in jackets seemed to understand it was a time for quiet reflection rather than exuberant play.

Larned City Council approves Sunday liquor sales

LARNED - The question of whether or not Larned will allow Sunday liquor sales was raised, and the answer from city council members came back yes, with only one member, Carroll Bennett, dissenting. No reason was provided. The owner of Guy's liquor store contacted Mayor William Nusser to request a change to the city code, allowing the sale of alcoholic liquor and cereal malt beverages on Sunday from noon to 8 p.m.

USD 431 hear report on state representatives visit

HOISINGTON - Friday afternoon, USD 431 Superintendent Bill Lowry met with Kansas Commissioner of Education Randy Watson and State Board of Education Representative Sally Cauble. Lowry spoke about the visit during his administrative report at the monthly meeting of the Board of Education Monday night.

Hoisington Mayoral race ends with Popp on top

Around the county, voters elected mayors and city council and school board members, and Ellinwood also elected trustees to the Ellinwood Hospital District. The big election night story was the Hoisington's Mayoral race.

THEY WANTED BLOOD...

LARNED - Thomas Harmon is the president of the Larned High School National Honor Society. On Monday, Oct. 30, members partnered with the Red Cross to hold a blood drive at the high school. For added fun and to raise awareness of the event, they opted to dress in Halloween costumes. Over the course of the day, 25 students gave blood. Most gave whole blood, but two students gave double-red blood, receiving plasma in return.

CLAFLIN - Tuesday afternoon, four guns that had been on loan to the Claflin Police Department from the U.S. General Services Agency for the past 15 years were destroyed under the watchful eye of Tim Hutley, a program specialist from the Kansas Dept. of Administration.

Claflin Chief Vaughan asked to chop feds’ guns

CLAFLIN -- Today, Claflin Chief of Police Gary Vaughan will meet with Tim Huntley, a representative from the Kansas field office of the U.S. General Services Administration at 12.30 p.m. at the Claflin City Shop. Huntley is coming for four guns the department was loaned from the federal government in a program that provided retired military equipment to local departments. Since then, Claflin has purchased its own guns, and no longer needs the federal guns.
