‘Battle of Badges’ blood drive challenge brings in donations

Monday, volunteers were on hand at the St. Rose Auditorium for the day-long 'Battle of the Badges' blood drive that has become an annual tradition in Great Bend. Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir, Great Bend Chief of Police Dean Akings and Great Bend Fire Chief Mike Napolitano were some of the first in line to roll up their sleeves to give blood. Community members who donate blood can vote for their favorite agency. The winning agency gets bragging rights for the year.

Standards provide peace of mind

It occurred to me when I was on a trip to Jamaica a few years ago. We're really lucky in America to have building codes, established several years ago, that most houses on the market in just about any city must adhere to.

‘Jelly lady’ serves up sweet summer sunshine...even on a rainy day

Winnie Ashley, better known to her customers as "the jelly lady," has been selling homemade jam and jelly since 1996. She sets up her tent at the farmers market at the Great Bend Public Library parking lot three days a week from May through September. From peach to apple, choke cherry or marmalade, she is ready with the small, jewel-toned jars full of captured seasonal flavors to be released whenever the urge strikes.

Changing of the Guard

The USD 428 Board of Education welcomed Superintendent Brad Reed to his first meeting Monday evening. At the beginning of each year, nominations and votes are made for president and vice president of the board. This year, the board was faced with the choice between Kevin Mauler, nominated by Dwight Young and seconded by Larry Kutina, and the incumbent, Joyce Carter, nominated by Doug Bender and seconded by Cheryl Rugan. EDC dancers travel to Tulsa nationals

Dancers from Euphoria Dance Center in Great Bend traveled to Tulsa, Okla. in June to compete in the Talent on Parade National Dance Competition where they performed a slate of solos, two duos, and a small group dance featuring several high placers from the regional competition held in Wichita in May.

More than 10,000 of America's best and brightest youth traveled to the historic city of Nashville to make some history of their own as they showcased their talents as future business leaders and vied for the opportunity to win over $165,000 in cash awards.

Barton County Museum receives rare gift

Recently, the Barton County Historical Society Museum received an exceptional gift from the Prosser family of Barton County. The surviving brothers of Maj. Bernard "Barney" J. Prosser, USMC (Ret.) gifted his military dress uniform jacket, complete with his many medals of commendation earned over a career spanning 31 years, hat and dress gloves.

Barton County 4H fashion forward

Wednesday morning, Barton County 4-Hers arrived bright and early at the annex of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend. Some came loaded down with clothing and home decorating projects, others with dress bags and hangers full of tops, skirts, dresses and pants. They came hoping to impress judges with their skills in buymanship and construction.

WE ARE FAMILY

Dr. Mirta M Martin attended a reception in her honor, courtesy of the Great Bend location of Farmers Bank and Trust and bank president William R. Robbins. It was her first official function on her first official day as the first female president of Fort Hays State University. When Dr. Martin took her turn at the podium, she talked about her journey as a refugee from Cuba, at the age of five, to Spain, where she lived for five years before she immigrated to the United States with her grandmother.

Wales 4-H member visiting Ellinwood

ELLINWOOD - Carys Vaughan, a college student from Pembrokeshire, Wales, is an Interviewed International Four-H Youth Exchange student staying with the Taff and Wendy Hughes family in Ellinwood. She is halfway through her five week stay in the United States.

Gonzalez's art about missing happiness

Great Bend artist Hugo Gonzalez was asked to contribute to the Shafer Art Gallery's exhibit, "Estamos Aqui: We are here" which is on display now through Aug. 20. The theme of the show brought to mind charcoal drawings he created over the past few years. The Half Tones series seeks to bring awareness of what happiness is by examining the missing parts in people's lives.

HOPE IS ALIVE

Children attending Camp Hope spent Wednesday morning at Stoneridge Country Club. While some came for the chance to play golf, others took part in a scavenger hunt that took teams around the club house grounds on a quest to play games, win stickers, and have fun.

With graduating classes numbering in the double digits, an intimacy that draws the whole community in, and a "the more the merrier" attitude prevails. Ellinwood kids putting the crunch on obesity

Crunch Out Obesity, the six-week program Ellinwood students in grades 4-6 participated in during April and May, came to an end Tuesday. Sponsors visited classes and awarded prizes to winners at both Ellinwood Grade School and St. Joseph School.

Honoring EMS volunteers

The City of Hoisington has gone to great lengths over the past year to recruit and support a fine group of Emergency Medical Technicians. Several members of that community have made the commitment to go through extensive training, and to be on call for several hours a month in order to safeguard the community and those that pass through it. As their numbers increase, so does the reliability of the service, and that is to be congratulated.
