Projects get green light in Ellinwood

Action taken Tuesday by the Ellinwood City Council should help the city move forward on several construction projects, and make it more attractive for patrons to consider moving ahead on some of their own.

Touch-a-truck connects kids to a community of vehicles

"We've taken our helicopter to events like this before, where its usually medical or law enforcement vehicles," said Randy Blaumenhorst, flight nurse with Lifeteam Critical Transport. "This is really something though, to have vehicles from every part of life for the kids to explore."

Hoisington Labor Day celebration starts Friday with Kick-off, BBQ and more

If parades, pageants, food, fun, music, dancing and derbies get your motor running, you'll probably be in Hoisington this weekend. The annual Hoisington Labor Day celebration begins Friday night, and the activity doesn't stop until Monday afternoon.

Forgetting isn’t an option

Monday, Barton County Health Department Director Shelly Schneider reported the turnout at the immunization carnival held earlier this month wasn't as great as they'd hoped it would be. That's too bad, because a lot of kids, especially teens, aren't up to date on their immunizations she said.

FINDING THEIR BEARINGS

Donald G. McMican, president of DGM Consultants, PA, a structural engineering and masonry consulting company, met with Ellinwood City Manager Bud Newberry, Mark and Cassie Batchman, and a representative of Stone Construction Monday morning. He was there at the request of the city to determine how to safely complete the demolition of a city-owned building at the corner of First and Main Street. The structure has sat untouched since late last September after the contractor, Nelson Stone, halted work when it became apparent knocking the building down was about to do more harm than good. Manuel Herrera 1995-2015

ST.JOHN - Manuel Herrera, 20, died Sunday Aug. 16, 2015 at Via Christi St. Francis, Wichita. Born May 22, 1995 at Brighton, Colo., he was the son of Jesus and Luz Emilia Herrera. He was a graduate of St. John High School. He is survived by his parents: Jesus and Luz Herrera; brothers: Erick Herrera and Omar Herrera; grandparents: Francisco Balderrama R., Ma de los Angeles Mendez M., Manuel Herrera M. and Monserrat Chavez O; and many aunts and uncles.

Ellinwood budget approved

The budget hearing at the Ellinwood City Council meeting Tuesday night, Aug. 11, was short with no public comment. The council then adopted resolution 8115, a new requirement by the state legislature of municipalities seeking to increase their mill levy, and unanimously approved the 2016 budget as presented for publication.

FIGHTING HUNGER

Imagine packing 15,120 meals for hungry children in just two hours. Now, imagine you had the help of more than 60 friends. That's just what happened at the Great Bend Expo 1 Friday night, when members of four churches gathered to take part in meal packaging event with the Kansas City non-profit Stop Hunger Now.

Car Crush

Saturday, whether they fancied vintage, classic, muscle, or "rat rods," car lovers found plenty to appreciate as they converged on Great Bend's Party in the Park car show. This year, the number of cars increased nearly 50 percent over last year's event. 142 cars were on display, up from 93 the year before. Several factors were at play, and the appearance of reality television show 'Street Rodding American Style,' with hosts David Wolfe and Cy McCormack on location to interview three car owners about their rides for an upcoming show didn't hurt.

SALOON UNDERGROUND

A must-see for visitors to Barton County for years has been the Ellinwood Underground tour. Now, thanks to the efforts of Wolf Hotel owner Chris McCord and his loyal volunteers, that tour offers not only a chance to imagine what it was like in the early days of the Santa Fe Trail town, but a chance to experience it firsthand.
