HOISINGTON - The tour of the utility billing office on the agenda for Monday night's Hoisington City Council meeting was canceled to make time for a last-minute agenda item. Mayor Clayton Williams had a proclamation to make, honoring Hoisington citizen Debbie Stevens, who two years ago created GPS Kids Club, and has a long history of caring for and about Hoisington's children.

Relay for Life celebrates fighters, remembers survivors

HOISINGTON - When cancer survivors and their caregivers line up for the Survivors' Lap at Relay for Life, it's hard not to be overcome by emotion, standing on the sidelines, clapping for those who have battled this disease and won. The sheer number of faces recognized can be overwhelming, with the realization how many people's lives are touched by cancer. As the survivors pass by, clapping and celebrating to the upbeat music, the memories of all those lost over the years surfaces, too.

Larned's Santa Fe Trail Days gets rolling

LARNED - Saturday morning, Broadway and Main filled with families and people of all ages out for a good time as the 2017 Santa Fe Trail Days parade and festivities began. At noon, crowds of people migrated towards what Larned residents affectionately call "sled hill," where the United Way of Central Kansas and the City of Larned prepared a plastic sluice where soon, a flotilla of over 700 ducks would soon float. The top 10 winners would walk away with cash prizes, and the rest, well, the loss would roll off them like water off a duck's back.

City of Larned considers billing changes

LARNED - Every month, the city of Larned sends an average of 529 late notices, or "red" bills, to utility customers. That's nearly 20 percent of the city's 2,700 utility contracts. Larned's City Council declared that's too many, and something needs to change. They tasked Kara Rath, the utility clerk, and Monica Steiner, the finance director, to conduct a study of how other cities like Larned combat similar problems. Rath and Steiner presented their proposal to the council Monday night.
