‘Star Spangled’ evening tops off Small Business Saturday

Last year, shoppers were few on Main Street for Small Business Saturday, as a cold, wet ice storm gathered strength, blowing in just prior to when the much anticipated holiday parade was to start. City officials worked to get the word out the parade would be cancelled as a safety measure. Fast forward to last Saturday night, and the pleasant weather more than made up for last year's loss, as the people of Great Bend began lining Main Street, some even foregoing jackets.

Environment not a partisan issue

Climate change is not a hoax just because the president elect says it is. It's no more a hoax than evolution is. And it's no more a hoax than God is. It is like many other hotly contested dramas humans entertain themselves with. Climate change can be compared to the question of when life begins. And it can be as hotly debated. Ultimately, it's up to each and every one of us to determine where on the value scale we stand.

Hoisington Main Street project completed

HOISINGTON - Code Enforcement Officer Dolores Kipper presented a report to the Hoisington City Council Monday night on her efforts to combat residential blight over the past year. Great Bend Public Library to align summer hours with school calendar

Next year, patrons of the Great Bend Public Library will find summer hours aligned with the USD 428 school year. Now, instead of hours changing between Memorial Day and Labor Day, the actual dates will shift from year to year depending on the school calendar. After looking into the change, the only cost associated with the change will be replacing the tie-on sign that advertises the hours, and that, Director Harry Willems said, is in need of replacing anyway. But, he added, they will need to determine the best way to communicate the message on the sign, as the actual ...
