Curriculum and testing discussed by USD 428 BOE

Getting down to the business of education, board members for USD 428 met Monday night to hear the first reading of a proposal and presentations by the K-6 math adoption team for a new district-wide math curriculum. After reviewing two options, the teachers came to a unanimous decision with overwhelming support for one that includes text and web-ready lessons, training and professional development, tech-support and consumables over a seven year period.

Elections and funding focus of legislative coffee

Sen. Mitch Holmes, Rep. John Edmonds and Rep. Troy Waymaster attended a legislative coffee held at the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce meeting room Saturday morning. School funding and April elections were the main points of discussion.

Bill proposes to take back over $360K from county USDs

A bill introduced by the Kansas Senate Committee on Ways and Means, SB 71, would cut $362,671 from Barton County USD's 428, 431 and 355 current school budget. It would do this by altering the way supplemental general state aid is calculated.

USD 431 moves closer to bond issue

The USD 431 Board of Education welcomed newly appointed member Ben Brewer who filled a position formerly occupied by Maggie Alderdice. Alderdice filled the position formerly occupied by Deb Stevens, who resigned in January. Now, with all the seats filled, the board went to work sorting through several applications for the Construction At Risk Manager position.

Hoisington rewards good handwriting

Last Friday, Jan. 23, Hoisington Middle School students recognized National Handwriting Day by competing in a handwriting contest. Teachers Karisa Kaiser and Shari Blase collected samples from students, and also awarded a prize to the student that could guess the highest number of teacher handwriting samples.

Unsafe properties focus of Hoisington City Council

The Hoisington City Council met Monday night and finally approved a resolution to approve the option to purchase real-estate between the city and Housing Opportunities Inc. for $21,500. The approval had been held up because of legal concerns over wording of the agreement which have since been worked out between the parties. This paves the way for additional duplex units to be constructed in Hoisington. The council also approved an option and sale contract to purchase property located at 309 E. Fifth for use by the city. A lien that had previously held up this agreement has been resolved.

Hog Feed Sunday to help GBHS A Capella Choir

The Great Bend High School A Capella Choir will hold a hog feed Sunday afternoon from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the high school commons. All proceeds will be applied to the choir's much anticipated annual trip to Washington D.C. Tickets can be purchased in advance from A Capella members or at the door on Sunday. They cost $10 each. Sizing things up

It was literally standing room only Monday night at the USD 428 District Education Center as Jefferson Elementary School students and their parents filled all available seats. They were there to be recognized by Jefferson Elementary School physical education teacher Tyler Shirley. Fourteen students received Shirley's Sportsmanship Awards over the fall semester for demonstrating impressive actions worthy of all-school recognition.

Hotel with local ties nominated for listing in National Register

Kansas is among 13 states and territories nominating historic properties to be included on the National Register of Historic Places to The National Park Service. Two of the sites are within an hour's drive of Great Bend. One, the Hotel Roberts, once belonged to the former Great Bend hoteliers Clement C. "Monte" and Ruth "Betty" Parrish.

Hoisington to build new elementary school

The USD 421 Board of Education made some important decisions Monday evening that will ensure the district's school buildings provide more safety and allow for innovative teaching techniques in the years to come. They also helped set the course for the district's band program into the future.
