4-H dog show marks start of fair

One often looked forward to event that marks the beginning of the Barton County Fair is the dog show. There is a reason it's held prior to the other Fair events. Even on a good day, getting a puppy or young dog to pay attentions to commands takes concentration on the dog's part, and patience on that of the owner. With the added excitement of Fair, it's a lot to ask of any canine to sit, stay or lay down, and that's enough to test the patience of even the most laid back 4-Her.

SEASONED GROWERS

Dan and Joyce Wapelhorst live west of Great Bend. For the past 12 years, they've been regular vendors at Great Bend farmers markets. But they've been gardening at their rural home for the past 30 years, and it shows. The well manicured lawn leads to a colorful flower garden with gazebo and pond focal points. During the summer months, the couple spend much time together there, enjoying the outdoors. When we visited, their grandson and helper was enjoying the pleasant day with them, coloring near the pond.

Soggy situation

HOISINGTON - Thanks to the quick thinking of Hoisington Public Works employees, some elbow grease and a little bit of luck, residents of Hoisington avoided what could have been a very hot day made hotter by an emergency order to conserve water.

Splash Pad goal reached, Ellinwood City Council considers next steps

Ellinwood's City Council met Tuesday night in anticipation of some good news from the Ellinwood Rotary Club. They weren't disappointed. Since the last council meeting when club member Rosie Joiner addressed the council, requesting the city consider providing some financial assistance in lieu of in-kind assistance preparing a grant offered by the former city manager, the club was now ready to move forward with the project. Hoisington City Council agrees on fireworks

HOISINGTON - The Hoisington City Council revisited a discussion that began at the May 23 meeting concerning when it is acceptable to set off fireworks, and what procedure residents should go through in order to have a block party to celebrate Independence Day.

COOL COMFORT

HOISINGTON - Participants in the 2016 Barton County Relay for Life breathed a sigh of relief Friday evening as each in their turn entered the cool, air conditioned Hoisington Activity Center. As they escaped the heat and humidity outside, energy that was lagging returned. Inside, they were met with a palpable sense of excitement that radiated from team members who had arrived early to set up food tables, team camps and activities for the night ahead.

'SCALE TIPPING' MERGER

HOISINGTON - Thursday morning, Great Bend, Hoisington and Ellinwood Chambers of Commerce held a joint coffee at the Hoisington Activity Center, leading up to an important announcement from the United Way of Central Kansas. The gathering was visited by representatives from both Senator Jerry Moran's and Senator Pat Roberts' offices, signaling the importance of the occasion.

EcoDevo news highlighted for City Council

At the Great Bend City Council meeting Monday night, Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development CEO Jan Peters confirmed that Freddy's Frozen Custard is indeed coming to Great Bend, and developers have begun work on the new restaurant that is expected to celebrate its grand opening in early October. Construction was delayed briefly due to the rain received at the end of May, but now work is beginning on the site.

Great Bend City Council to meet Monday night

The Great Bend City Council will meet Monday night at 7:30 p.m. at the council chamber. The agenda includes informational items including city council reports, the City Administrator Howard Partington's update, appointments, an economic development report by Jan Peters, and Partington will give an update on the calendar that is being developed for the bond issue to pay for the improvements to the city's water system.

Relay for Life set for next Friday

Throughout the year, teams from all over Barton County have been raising funds for the 2016 Relay for Life. A look at Relay for Life of Barton County's facebook page tells the story of ordinary people coming together to hold bake sales, pulled pork dinners, brunches and pancake feeds, 5K run/walks and "Diva Days" in an effort to keep Barton County a top contributor in the state to the cause focused on finding and funding a cure for cancer, a disease that has stolen many lives in its many forms.

Uniforms of past wars featured at BCHS museum

"Every since Barton County has existed, we have been represented in every war foreign war this country has fought in," said Beverly Komarek. director at the Barton County Historical Society museum. Visitors to the museum this Memorial Day weekend can view military uniforms from all past wars, from The Spanish American in 1898 to the Mid-East conflicts of today.
