Local first responders are keeping it real

All week, the national news has brought us more footage of young people protesting the actions of police, looting and burning, and throwing things at officers dressed in S.W.A.T. gear. Meanwhile, the police and fire and rescue personnel of Great Bend and the surrounding jurisdictions continued to go about the business of keeping the public safe.

Guns and Hoses a blast

Smoke, sirens, firehoses, hats and badges, and Kia the K-9 officer drew a sizable turnout to the first annual Guns and Hoses open house Saturday morning. Great Bend Police, Fire and Rescue collaborated on the event that showcased the elements of how these men and women work and train to keep the people of Great Bend safe each day.

Hayden featured speaker at Cheyenne Bottoms Rotary visit

Rotarians flocked to the Kansas Wetlands Education Center Saturday to hear 41st Kansas Governor Michael Hayden talk about the importance of the Cheyenne Bottoms wetlands as a natural resource and of water conservation in light of increased demands on a finite supply.

Park 6th grade creates hunger piece

Paige Koehn, a sixth-grader at Park Elementary School, helped her classmates create a public art piece by sticking 2,704 white plastic forks in the courthouse lawn Friday afternoon. Each fork, she explained, represents 1,000 kids who suffer from hunger each day.

Ellinwood Wellness Center open

After four years of planning and work by the Ellinwood Recreation Commission, the dream of opening a year-round fitness facility was realized Friday morning with the grand opening of the Ellinwood Wellness Center.

Ellinwood kids versus cops in dodgeball match

Meanwhile, over at the Ellinwood Elementary School, students were enjoying a break from the usual P.E. program. Friday, members of the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 23, met in the gym for several friendly rounds of dodge ball.

Playing through

Thanks to the ever growing reach of social media, the world continues to grow...cozier. The Great Bend Tribune received a submission through its website April 21 from a New Zealander concerned about what happened in a YouTube video taken on April 10. A golf cart crossing US 56 at the Ellinwood golf course, in the midst of traffic backed up from road construction west of the city, zipped across the road in front of the driver who was filming her trip with a dashboard mounted camera.

Show and tell

Show and tell ranks along with gym, recess and lunch as one of the more fun parts of school. Some students from Shelly Hanzlik's fourth grade class at Hoisington's Lincoln Elementary School were picked to provide just that to members of the local media Tuesday afternoon. They came to hear a practice run of the talk students will present during an open house Sunday afternoon at the school.

Condemnation process started on Hoisington house

The Hoisington City Council Monday night considered an immediate hazard designation for the property located at 522 E. Fifth St. The property burned Wednesday night, April 22, and claimed the life of its sole resident, LeRoy George Schartz, Jr., age 62. Don Doerschlag, Hoisington's code enforcement officer, provided the council with a written report concerning his findings. The fire is still under investigation, so he opted not to display pictures publicly. The house was a complete loss.

Hoisington extends pound contract to Mitchell

The Hoisington City Council will continue to contract with Lindsay Mitchell, D.V.M. and Hoisington Veterinary Hospital for municipal pound services. During the discussion, City Manager Jonathan Mitchell removed himself due to a perceived conflict of interest.

Ellinwood High School FBLA sponsors Ellinwood Chamber of Commerce coffee

On Friday, April 24, members of the Ellinwood Chamber of Commerce attended a weekly coffee hosted by the Ellinwood High School FBLA chapter. Sponsor Lorie Betts opened the program, asking each member to introduce themselves and talk about the projects they participated in at the state competition, and whether they would be attending the national competition to be held in Chicago during the summer. Nearly half the members appeared on stage at the state competition, something Betts noted was much better than hoped for.
