“Broad and flexible” is the word on workplace lactation support

According to Kansas state statutes, it is public policy that a mother's choice to breast feed should be supported and encouraged to the greatest extent possible, and that a mother may breast feed in any place she has a right to be. But most nursing mothers who choose to return to work will leave babies with a daycare provider and need to express milk throughout the day in order to maintain their supply.

Extension nears first century of serving county

For nearly 100 years, the Barton County Extension service has brought research based, unbiased information and education home to the people of the county. The Smith-Lever Act which established the Extension service throughout the country, marks it's first century in 2014. While the world has changed, the mission hasn't, said Extension Agent Berny Unruh.

Reeling in a big one

During routine dive training, the Great Bend Fire Department located two vehicles under water near the south boat ramp at Stone Lake. Both may have been reported stolen as far back as 2011, based off license tags.

Agencies scrutinize proposal

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service objected to the issuance of a permit for H&C Oil Operating Inc., to drill for oil in the Cheyenne Bottoms wetlands during the public comment period provided by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. It further recommended an environmental impact statement be prepared, and the permit be held in abeyance pending the completion of the EIS.

A FRESH LOOK

This past spring, work began on the development of 11 two-bedroom duplexes by Housing Opportunities Inc., located east of Washington St. and 31st Ave. in Great Bend. Now, with construction only two months away from completion, Housing Opportunities Director Vicky Dayton says the non-profit will start taking applications for tenants Wednesday, July 24. Applicants must be disabled or age 55 and over.

Living Kaleidoscope

The Kansas Wetlands Education Center hosted a count for the North American Butterfly Association Saturday morning. While the overall number of individuals was way down, participants found a total of 26 species of butterflies in the count radius, the highest since starting, said Pam Martin, Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism educator at KWEC. Only 15 different species were found in the same area in 2012.

USD 428 Superintendent Vernon to retire

The USD 428 Board of Education opened the 2013-2014 fiscal year with the nomination and voting in of Joyce Carter as president and Kevin Mauler as vice-president. Several appointments and designations were agreed upon by consent, and are discussed in length in the accompanying article.

New Slate of USD 428 Appointees and Designees

Joyce Carter's nomination for USD 428 Board of Education President was approved and she was unanimously voted to the position. Dwight Young was thanked for his service to the board for the past year, and Carter accepted nominations for Vice-President. The board approved Kevin Mauler for that position.
