Sally Cauble, District 5 board member of the Kansas State Board of Education, visited Great Bend June 5. She and Superintendent Tom Vernon led a focus group meeting at which the public was invited to weigh in on what qualities they felt the next Commissioner of Education should possess.

Like a sequel to the award winning children's story, "Make Way for Ducklings," residents of one Great Bend neighborhood took part in a duck tale of their own over Memorial Day weekend.

Unusual Strawberry

The great part about living in a community like Great Bend is the friendliness of neighbors. Virgil Kober, Great Bend, stopped in to the Tribune office Tuesday afternoon to share some homegrown strawberries with us and show off this unusual looking specimen. This is the second year he's been growing this particular strawberry patch at 126 Kiowa Road, he said. We can state for a fact the berries had good flavor and were juicy. Virgil planned to share the odd one with his wife.

BUBBLES BUBBLES AND MORE BUBBLES

Tuesday afternoon, preschoolers from Helping Hands Preschool walked to the Great Bend Public Library to visit Children's Librarian Amanda Moran-Jones to hear stories about bubbles. As a special treat, Amanda invited the kids to blow bubbles on the library lawn.

Kansas State Board of Education focuses on new Commissioner search

Great Bend will host one of three district focus groups on June 5 at 7 p.m. at USD 428 District Office at 201 S. Patton Rd. District 5 Board Vice-Chair Sally Cauble will lead focus groups in order to gather constituent feedback as to what they believe to be the most critical educational issues in Kansas, and the experiences and skills they feel are essential forthe next Kansas Commissioner of Education. The meeting is open and educators, parents and interested patrons are encouraged to attend.

‘Dance Opposition’ recital debuts Friday

Just Dance Studio, Great Bend, will present a spring recital Friday, May 23. "Dance Opposition," a study of opposites such as Lost and Found, Good and Bad (competition winner), and Captive and Free, will start at 7 p.m. at the Great Bend High School Auditorium.

Kansas Extension helps gardeners choose best performers

Recently, Alicia Boor, Barton County Extension Agent, introduced Great Bend gardeners to water wise plants endorsed by Kansas State University. It's part of a statewide effort to help Kansans make better choices that will add beauty while conserving water in the landscape.
