Claflin Mayor ‘thumbs down’ on storage request

CLAFLIN - Shane Suchy returned to the Claflin City Council Monday night in anticipation of its findings on his December proposal to bring five storage units and place them on the property at 130 NE Ave. and K-4. He didn't get the answer he was hoping for.

USD 428 teachers express concern over HB 2142

A group of USD 428 current and retired teachers attended the legislative coffee Saturday hosted by the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce. One educator questioned the thinking behind the newly proposed HB 2142. The bill, essentially, would place all teachers and staff of K-12 public education into one large pool for health insurance.

That's what made Saturday's coffee hosted by the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce an unexpected treat. All four of Barton County's elected state representatives made time to come and answer questions and share their early insights about the 2017 legislative session.

The Great Bend City Council decided Monday night to disregard the recommendations of Carl Otter, the city's own engineering technician, and of Josh Golka, the city's on-call engineering consultant with Professional Engineering Consultants, and approve one family's request to install a circular driveway at their property at Harrison and Broadway.

Tribune attends KPA day at Capitol

TOPEKA - The Kansas Press Association Day at the Legislature fell on Thursday. Organized by KPA leadership, it provides newspaper editors and publishers an opportunity to travel to Topeka, network with, and meet en masse with legislators. Thursday, Great Bend Tribune Publisher Mary Hoisington and Managing Editor Dale Hogg were among the 50 members in attendance.

LOVE TO SHARE

When Jadisyn Andrasek, 8, overheard her grandmother talking to a friend about the Box of Love promotion sponsored by the United Way of Central Kansas, she wanted to help. She thought for a moment, and decided she could share a nice Valentine note to be put in each of the packages. Using the pages from the friend's heart-shaped notepad, Jadisyn went to work on the project, and wrote 80 Valentine's greetings. She also attached a sweet treat to each one.
