THEY WANTED BLOOD...

LARNED - Thomas Harmon is the president of the Larned High School National Honor Society. On Monday, Oct. 30, members partnered with the Red Cross to hold a blood drive at the high school. For added fun and to raise awareness of the event, they opted to dress in Halloween costumes. Over the course of the day, 25 students gave blood. Most gave whole blood, but two students gave double-red blood, receiving plasma in return.

CLAFLIN - Tuesday afternoon, four guns that had been on loan to the Claflin Police Department from the U.S. General Services Agency for the past 15 years were destroyed under the watchful eye of Tim Hutley, a program specialist from the Kansas Dept. of Administration.

Claflin Chief Vaughan asked to chop feds’ guns

CLAFLIN -- Today, Claflin Chief of Police Gary Vaughan will meet with Tim Huntley, a representative from the Kansas field office of the U.S. General Services Administration at 12.30 p.m. at the Claflin City Shop. Huntley is coming for four guns the department was loaned from the federal government in a program that provided retired military equipment to local departments. Since then, Claflin has purchased its own guns, and no longer needs the federal guns.

GETTING IN THE HALLOWEEN SPIRIT

With temperatures hovering in the low 40s, families turned out in the hundreds for the annual downtown merchant's Halloween costume parade which started at 11 a.m. at the Barton County Courthouse Saturday. Businesses along Main Street decorated tables and staff members dressed up in anticipation of treating youngsters. Costumes ranged from sweet to ghoulish and everything in between. Ages ranged from the stroller bound to those entering middle school, with some parents getting into the act too. They dressed mostly as superheroes, unicorns, ghosts and goblins. Some groups adopted overall themes with their costumes, while other trick-or-treaters dressed ...

USD 431 BOE expands fundraising policy to HMS

HOISINGTON - The Hoisington USD 431 board of education met Monday, Oct. 2 at the District Office. The board reviewed a district policy on fundraising which was approved in 2015, and approved extending the reach of the policy to the middle school classes.

Skip-it to Give-it campaign helping Haiti

A local effort this month has people in Barton County giving up little luxuries they can live without, and tucking away the money they would have spent so it can go to help people in Haiti still recovering from the devastating effects of the 2010 earthquake that leveled most of the buildings on the island.

MAYORAL HOPEFULS

In order to provide Great Bend voters with information to help guide their voting in November, the Great Bend Tribune and the Great Bend chapter of the League of Women Voters sponsored a candidates forum Tuesday night at the Crest Theater. The forum was organized according to the rules set down by the National League of Women Voters. The Tribune provided a live feed on the Great Bend Tribune Facebook page.

Subway pulling out of Hoisington

HOISINGTON -- A week ago, Hoisington City Manager Jonathan Mitchell was contacted by the regional manager of Subway. The news wasn't good. He was informed the Subway restaurant in Hoisington would be ceasing operations effective Tuesday, Oct. 17. Management wanted to make arrangements for the building. Mitchell shared what he knew with the city council at Monday night's meeting.
