Santa Fe Trail Days starts today

LARNED - It's the second weekend of June, and that means it's time for the Annual Santa Fe Trail Days celebration. The four-day event has something for every age group, with shopping, food, entertainment, contests and, of course, entertainment. Today, the Annual Community Banquet and opening ceremony will be held at the Larned Knights of Columbus Hall, with social hour beginning at 6 p.m., and supper at 6:30 p.m.

June Jaunt cancer screening well attended

While Jack Kilby Square filled with people on Saturday for June Jaunt activities, many stopped in at the Barton County Health Department across the street for a free cancer screening offered by the Great Bend Masonic Lodge #113.

City of Larned considers billing changes

LARNED - Every month, the city of Larned sends an average of 529 late notices, or "red" bills, to utility customers. That's nearly 20 percent of the city's 2,700 utility contracts. Larned's City Council declared that's too many, and something needs to change. They tasked Kara Rath, the utility clerk, and Monica Steiner, the finance director, to conduct a study of how other cities like Larned combat similar problems. Rath and Steiner presented their proposal to the council Monday night.

Five years ago, June Jaunt made its premiere, encouraging locals and travelers along K-96 to "get their fix" of fun and fantastic entertainment as they journey from Tribune at the Colorado border, east to Barton County. This year, Great Bend is the ultimate destination for fun.

After advertising for months, spring had sprung, and it appeared that every lot available under a Moderate Income Housing grant would be spoken for.

Hoisington painting program yielding positive results

HOISINGTON -- Dolores Kipper, the city's code enforcement officer, Monday night provided an update to the city council on her efforts to encourage property owners to take advantage of the city's needs-based grant program to help spruce up the exteriors of some houses suffering from deferred maintenance.

Pawnee Rock residents take shelter as tornado hits

PAWNEE ROCK - Roads into the city of Pawnee Rock were closed through Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning to all but residents and emergency responders. A tornado impacted the western corner of the city, toppling trees and damaging roofs, sending flying debris through house and car windows. A gas line was ruptured, requiring residents in that part of the city to be evacuated immediately. Throughout the city, fallen branches littered yards and the roadway.

GBPL cleans house, purging 5K patrons from active list

The Great Bend Public Library Board of Directors met Monday afternoon, recognizing staff member Allison Muth in absentia, who graduated from Great Bend High School Sunday. Erin Ferguson, the adult services supervisor, provided a departmental report. She first handed out the Summer Reading calendar of events to board members. She then reported that a patron audit had resulted in the library purging approximately 5,000 patrons who have not been active users since 2014. This, she said, was overdue maintenance, and recommended by the State Library Board to ensure an accurate reflection of how often patrons are using the library ...
