Hoisington City Council approves bid for west side lift station project

Once again, the Hoisington City County delved into city policy work Monday night at a regular meeting at the city offices. The result - more city employees will now be able to take time off for vacations and sick-leave without the worry of a smaller paycheck upon their return.

Time to tune in, not out

Tonight's the night. The second debate for Republican presidential candidates will take place at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif. Eleven men and women vying for the nomination will meet, and CNN, the host of the debate, has organized it to encourage as much interaction with the hopefuls as possible. If you can't be home between 5 and 6:45 p.m., set your recorders now.

School board approves Neighborhood Revitalization Grant

Ellinwood City Manager Bud Newberry addressed the USD 355 Board of Education Monday night at their regular meeting, explaining the proposed neighborhood revitalization plan. He provided details of how taxpayers are provided tax rebates over the course of five to eight years, depending on the location of their project, in an effort to incentivize improvements that will lead to significant increases in valuation of property in the district.

Plan B: City of Ellinwood to resume Main Street demolition

Don McMican, Engineer with DGM Consultants, P.A., provided the City of Ellinwood with his report on his visit to their property located at 102 N. Main Street, and his subsequent recommendation of how to proceed with the demolition of the building in a way that puts the neighboring building, 104 N. Main, owned by Mark and Cassie Batchman at the least amount of risk.

Frieb receives generous donation for Eagle Scout project

On Aug. 14, Eric Frieb, a senior at Otis Bison High School, received an answer to a prayer. The soon-to-be Eagle Scout needed extra funding to complete the first phase of a garden pavilion project at Heartland Farm, west of Great Bend. He proposed the build for his Eagle Scout community leadership project after learning of the need the Dominican Sisters of Peace had for such a building while volunteering at the farm. While it was a particularly ambitious project, Frieb convinced the Boy Scout council and the board at Heartland Farm that he was up to the challenge.

Projects get green light in Ellinwood

Action taken Tuesday by the Ellinwood City Council should help the city move forward on several construction projects, and make it more attractive for patrons to consider moving ahead on some of their own.

Touch-a-truck connects kids to a community of vehicles

"We've taken our helicopter to events like this before, where its usually medical or law enforcement vehicles," said Randy Blaumenhorst, flight nurse with Lifeteam Critical Transport. "This is really something though, to have vehicles from every part of life for the kids to explore."

Hoisington Labor Day celebration starts Friday with Kick-off, BBQ and more
