Many watch as old opera house falls

"I will definitely not forget this day," said Braydan Peak. He and mom Sheryl watched from an office window at First United Methodist Church as workers from Stone Sand Co. gingerly demolished Great Bend's old opera house at the intersection of Williams and Forest streets. As they watched, the history of the day was not lost on either of them.

A Golden Honor

Friday morning, area veterans met at the Great Bend American Legion Hall for coffee and a chance to honor an old friend and one of the three known U.S. military Generals from Great Bend. Teacher achievements recognized

Fourth grade teacher Tammy Cale and physical education teacher Bryan Scott, both of Riley Elementary School, were given well-deserved recognition by the USD 428 Board of Education, led by Kevin Mauler, president, Monday night.

Walking School Bus leading the way

Riley Elementary School in Great Bend and Hoisington's elementary schools were among 15 schools in Kansas that launched a Walking School Bus program Oct. 1. On Tuesday, two weeks into the program, Robert Johnson, a consultant with PedNet, visited with volunteers of both districts, walked with students, and shot video footage for a documentary PedNet will produce to introduce schools to the program in the future.

Riley alum returns to teach fire safety

Jose Reza, Great Bend Fire Department's newest firefighter, visited students at Riley Elementary School Tuesday morning as part of a four-man team teaching fire safety. Reza attended school at Riley as a child, a fact Battalion Chief John Stettinger passed on to kids as they gathered around the young fireman to learn about the gear he uses in his job every day.

STEM training coming to USD 428

Randy Wetzel, Great Bend High School assistant principal, presented a proposal to the USD 428 Board of Education that will give students a leg up on pursuing careers in STEM fields. STEM refers to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Showing their Chops

Jazz filled the air in the Great Bend High School auditorium Tuesday night as the GBHS Jazz Band took the stage for its fall concert, which was open to the public. Soloists include Ben Diel, Aaron Schultz, Michael Raymer, Michelle Rooney and Allison Regehr, practicing since August, weeks before classes started, were polished and ready to show their chops.

Lucinda Guliford 1914-2014

Lucinda Guliford, 100, died Sept. 30 at Piedmont Fayette Hospital, Fayetteville, Ga. Born May 31, 1914 at Jetmore, she was the daughter of Noah and Eliza (Gill) Reed.

Fire and Sword

Two hours into the event, already nearly 100 people had visited the Great Bend Renaissance Fair on Saturday. It was an encouraging start to the event's fourth year. Steady growth allowed organizer David LeRoy to request a smaller grant from the city than years past, as the fair begins to cover its own expenses.

This weekend, Long's Pumpkin Patch, a half-mile west of Barton Community College north of Great Bend welcomed a steady stream of visitors eager to find the perfect pumpkin to decorate their home for fall.

Great Bend hunter turns inventor

George Weber, 53, of Great Bend, has lived in and has been hunting in Barton County all his life. The 5-foot-6-inch, 190-pound muscular man with a full beard and intense blue eyes that capture your attention as he speaks seems at the same time younger in body and wiser in spirit than his stated age. His handshake is firm, and his manner respectful.
