Full house at legislative coffee

It's not unusual for only a couple state legislators to fit a local legislative coffee into their schedules during the regular session. That's what made Saturday's coffee hosted by the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce an unexpected treat. All four of Barton County's elected state representatives made time to come and answer questions and share their early insights about the 2017 legislative session.

Tribune attends KPA day at Capitol

TOPEKA - The Kansas Press Association Day at the Legislature fell on Thursday. Organized by KPA leadership, it provides newspaper editors and publishers an opportunity to travel to Topeka, network with, and meet en masse with legislators. Thursday, Great Bend Tribune Publisher Mary Hoisington and Managing Editor Dale Hogg were among the 50 members in attendance.

LOVE TO SHARE

When Jadisyn Andrasek, 8, overheard her grandmother talking to a friend about the Box of Love promotion sponsored by the United Way of Central Kansas, she wanted to help. She thought for a moment, and decided she could share a nice Valentine note to be put in each of the packages. Using the pages from the friend's heart-shaped notepad, Jadisyn went to work on the project, and wrote 80 Valentine's greetings. She also attached a sweet treat to each one. 2017 Miss Barton County and Miss Golden Belt pageant features nine

Saturday night marked the fifth in an annual tradition that is bringing back an appreciation for talent, fitness and style of young women in the Golden Belt area. The 2017 Miss Barton County and Miss Golden Belt Scholarship Pageant was held at the Great Bend High School auditorium, and features four contestants for Miss Barton county, and five for Miss Golden Belt.

Editor's note: At the start of the 2016-2017 school year, we met all five Ellinwood High School exchange students when Sen. Jerry Moran visited the school. That first visit, we saw Nazar Kayumov perform a simple card trick in the hallway as he assisted other students tacking up posters for an upcoming event. Clearly, his talent was already known by his peers. Later, Nazar was a guest of the Ellinwood Rotary Club, and there he performed several magic tricks, which left that group of Ellinwood professionals both flummoxed and delighted.
