Hoisington City Council considers new direction for clean up efforts

Success breeds success, its been said, and the City of Hoisington is hoping to continue proving the statement true. Over the past year, efforts to clean up refuse, tear down blighted properties, paint and correct deferred maintenance have worked. But at the same time, it has come to the city's attention that for some residents, that clean up comes at a cost that is beyond their resources. Olmitz shows support for VFD

Saturday, April 30, Barton County traffic to Olmitz was up as fun-seekers headed north to the Olmitz Volunteer Fire Department Fundraiser. The goal, to build community and raise money for needed equipment for the volunteer firefighters who dedicate their time to keeping the people of Olmitz and the surrounding area safe.

Florence Louise Shaffer 1931 - 2016

Florence Louise Shaffer, 84, died May 7, 2016, at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born Dec. 6, 1931, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of John J. and Sophia B. (Gleissner) Bahr. On Nov. 26, 1952, she married Benjamin J. Shaffer in Olmitz. A Great Bend resident since 1995, she had previously resided in Hays from 1953 to 1969, Great Bend from 1969 to 1985, and Ness City from 1985 to 1995. She was a Registered Nurse and private care provider.

A new tree in the forest

What a difference a week can make. Last Friday, Great Bend was inches deep in rain from an all day shower. This week, its sunny skies and perfect weather for planting a tree. That's exactly what Lincoln fifth-grader Natalie Williams did after school, with a little help from her friends on the Great Bend Tree Board, Vickie Berryman and Lisa Whipple.

Ellinwood Rotary putting a colorful twist on community event

The Ellinwood Rotary Club will change up a favorite June Jaunt activity this year. For the past couple of years they organized a Color Run, but after the initial year, attendance waned. What was missing, they believed, was a sense of competition that would get teams revved up to take part.

Accepting teams for Ellinwood men’s softball tournament

The Ellinwood Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a men's softball tournament on Saturday, June 4th on Worman Field in Ellinwood. Registration is $180 per team, $150 if registered by May 15th.

Vendors sought for Ellinwood June Jaunt

The Ellinwood Chamber of Commerce is taking booth registration for the annual K-96 June Jaunt to be held on Saturday, June 4, 2016. This year's event will be held in Wolf Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Outdoor Market will include antiques, vintage, refurbished, re-purposed, homemade, home based business products and concessions. Great Bend Tree Boards marks Arbor Day with tree giveaway

Michael Fletcher, arborist with the Great Bend Tree Board, marked a decades long Arbor Day tradition with fifth graders at Great Bend elementary schools and Holy Family Catholic School Friday afternoon. Each spring, the Great Bend Tree Board distributes redbud tree seedlings to fourth grade students in the district as part of its ongoing community outreach project with the National Arbor Day Society.

Shaping the future, one branch at a time

About a year ago, Great Bend planted a seed that should begin to bear fruit in a few years. Last week was the anniversary of the creation of the Great Bend Community Orchard. That's right--our community has an orchard of apple trees that someday we can picnic at, use for a photo backdrop, learn orcharding skills like pruning and grafting, harvest fruit from for community outreach projects or cooking classes through our Barton County Extension or Barton County Health Department.

Brooklyn, New York, born Don McPherson wasn't shy about sharing his appreciation of his new friends in Great Bend Tuesday. Here for one day to help spread the message that men have a part to play in raising awareness of and battling domestic and sexual violence, he wasn't afraid to share his bothersome concerns of what it means to be in tornado country in the springtime. It didn't make him any less a man. Quite the contrary.

Hoisington City Council approves annexation request

The Hoisington City Council met Monday night and approved an annexation request from Kenny Schremmer for a property he owns located just south of the railroad tracks near Railroad Ave. and US 281. A developer has expressed interest in the property, and has conducted a variety of tests including water and soil tests, as well as a traffic assessment in recent weeks. At this time, Schremmer said, he is under contract with the party who intends to bring a Sonic Drive-in restaurant to the location.
