Extending the season

No tolerance for neglect

Surely it is a relief to all parties that the City of Ellinwood earlier this week made the decision to accept an offer from Mark and Cassie Batchman to purchase their property at 104 N. Main, making way to complete the demolition of two blighted properties on the city's two-block business district without risk of damaging a successful business.

City of Ellinwood to purchase Batchman property

The Ellinwood City Council met Monday night in a special meeting to consider an agreement that would put an end to a year-long debacle that had not only caused one Ellinwood family countless financial headaches, but also prompted community members to publicly declare their dissatisfaction with the city over the handling of a public improvement project gone awry. The council went into executive session for 10 minutes for a discussion of the possible property acquisition. Upon returning to open session, Mayor Irlan Fullbright summarized the discussion.

City of Ellinwood to consider purchase of 104 N. Main at special meeting Monday

The Ellinwood City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Monday night in a special meeting to consider an agreement to purchase property. The owners of the property at 104 N. Main, Mark and Cassie Batchman, contacted city staff regarding a proposal to sell the property to the City. Staff has negotiated a proposed contract for Council's consideration for the purchase of the property.

What's that sound?

Women for Kansas, the grassroots organization working to organize women in an effort to elect moderates to office throughout the state, wants to form more local chapters, and Great Bend is on their short list of desired communities. Prairie Land Food partners with First United Methodist Church

Prairie Land Food, operating out of First United Methodist Church at 2123 Forest Ave., is offering the public a chance to save on the "Holiday Dinner" package just in time for Thanksgiving. Orders will be taken between Oct. 24 and Nov. 10 for the special which includes a 12 to 14 lb. whole, uncooked turkey, sweet potatoes, potatoes, onlions, carrots, celery, oranges, apples and a 10-inch 38 oz. pumpkin pie. The cost for everything is $35, and will be available for pick-up on Friday, Nov. 20. Large orders from groups or organizations will also be accepted through Nov. 10.

Hoisington breaks ground on new housing project

Members of the Housing Opportunities Inc. Board, Hoisington city officials, Chamber of Commerce representatives and several other honored guests met at Thursday afternoon for a ceremonial ground breaking of the Eastwood Apartments, a six duplex project that will relieve housing pressure by increasing the available safe and affordable housing in Hoisington by another 12 units upon completion. This is the 15th project by HOI in 15 years, according to HOI Executive Director Vicky Dayton, who addressed the group.

KC Wolf visits Hoisington students

Hoisington elementary students were treated to a visit by Dan Meers, who performs as the Kansas City Cheifs' mascot, KC Wolf, on Thursday morning at Roosevelt Elementary School. The visit was courtesy of the Hoisington Elementary Parents Association.

Scouts turn out for Ellinwood City Council

ELLINWOOD -When Ellinwood Scout master Scott Reser learned the city council would discuss the fate of the scout house at Wolf Park Tuesday evening, he picked up the phone and rallied scout leaders and scouts who filled the city office to show their support of fixing the roof and keeping the building around for future generations of scouts to meet in.

Recycling benefits increasing

Last year, Sunflower Diversified Services purchased a grinder, allowing the recycling business to grow. Now, glass can be ground and made useful locally by the Barton County Road and Bridge Department for paving our rural roads. This was fantastic news this week. It shows that recycling is certainly worthwhile.
