The USD 428 Board of Education and Superintendent Tom Vernon met with the Great Bend chapter of the KNEA teachers union on Monday afternoon for a session of Interest Based Bargaining (IBB) over the upcoming school year calendar. The Great Bend sixth grade citywide concert drew parent of musicians from each of the city's elementary schools to the Great Bend High School auditorium Monday night for a showcase of skills learned over the past year. Top teachers visit USD 428, share ideas
Kansas Teachers of the Year from region one visited Great Bend USD 428 Friday to observe and gather insights and ideas to take back to their districts, said Kim Heath, an English teacher at GBHS. She and fourth grade teacher Laurie Harwood hosted the day-long tour for five other teachers from Dodge City, Liberal, Ellis and Pratt.

Great Bend First United Methodist Church and Trinity Methodist Church will co-sponsor the Shoot For No Malaria contest Sunday, April 14 at the GBHS Panther Activity Center starting at 2:00 p.m. All proceeds will go to "Imagine No Malaria." Funds received will purchase mosquito netting and help in educating people in tropical, under-developed nations where malaria is still a menacing killer.

Not getting pets vaccinated against rabies could cost a bundle
Locally, a rabies vaccination for a cat or dog costs on the average $15, plus a mandatory examination which can cost around $25. For most people who drive the average truck, that's about the same as a half a tank of gas at today's prices. Edna I. (Craig) Logan Francis, 99, formerly of Claflin, died Friday, May 17 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. Born Nov. 5, 1913 near Caldwell, she was the daughter of Homer Francis and Katie Elmira (Siebenthaler) Craig.
TLC Twisters bring comfort to shelter dogs
The TLC Twisters 4-H club at TLC Discoveries built eight dog beds which they presented to the Golden Belt Humane Society last week. The beds, made of donated PVC pipe and nylon material, will provide a place for puppies and smaller dogs to relax off the cement floor. They are easily hosed off, and are quick drying, making them ideal for a kennel environment.

High schoolers may get a few extra zs next year thanks to a proposal approved at the USD 428 board meeting Monday night. But not for teachers. Board members approved a series of late starts for the high school during the 2013-2014 school year that would give teachers the time they need to collaborate, but take away two hours of student contact time a month
