Olmitz fun day Saturday

OLMITZ -- Olmitz' volunteer fire department is hosting the second annual day of fun at Olmitz, from 11 a.m to midnight on Saturday, April 29. The car show and bounce house will be going from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the Olmitz Volunteer Fire Department Hog Feed fundraiser starts at 5 p.m., with a raffle drawing at 7 p.m. Guns, grills, tools, a patio set, and a 1/2 hog will be featured items. KanCare Expansion forum shares potential Barton County impact

Monday night, a forum organized by The Alliance for Healthy Kansas at the Prince of Peace parish hall sought to inform and provide answers about why it's important now for Kansas to expand Medicaid now, even as President Donald Trump has sworn to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. Several Barton County residents, as well as some from neighboring counties attended.

LARNED - Saturday night, students of Larned High School attending prom will have more than dancing and fancy attire on their minds. Chemicals burn at Rice County plant

RICE COUNTY - Thursday morning, workers at the Jacam chemical plant located between Lyons and Sterling were sent home when chemicals in one of the buildings caught fire. The blaze and smoke could be seen for miles.

Yellow, red or green

HOISINGTON - Tom Morey is the floodplain manager for the State of Kansas, under the Kansas Department of Agriculture. He partners with the Federal Emergency Management Agency as a cooperating technical partner in an effort to update floodplain maps in the state. Wednesday afternoon, he and several consultants visited with Barton County residents affected by the new Cow Creek Floodplain draft map.

Rain slows Ellinwood KDOT project

ELLINWOOD - No one in Ellinwood is complaining about the rain the area has received in the past 48 hours, but it has temporarily stopped the KDOT project along Santa Fe Ave. where storm sewers are being updated and new concrete is being poured.

Remodel bid sparks council debate

HOISINGTON - City Council members were uncertain how to proceed Monday night after they were presented with three bids for the construction and installation of new cabinets and counter tops for the city offices. In February, Hoisington City Manager Jonathan Mitchell said money had been set aside for a few years for the remodeling of the offices. Still, when he shared that office staff recommended the high bid, which was nearly 50 percent higher than the other two bids, eyebrows were raised.
