ELLINWOOD - The Ellinwood City Council met Monday night, and began the meeting with a brief public hearing of the 2017 budget which was published earlier in the Ellinwood Leader. The mill levy will remain virtually the same as last year, City Attorney Bob Peter summarized. No public comments, so the hearing was closed. Ken Lebbin moved to approve the budget, seconded by Kirk Clawson. The council approved the budget unanimously.
HOISINGTON - As part of the reorganization of the council, in the wake of former Council President Brian Wilborn stepping down in July, the council elected a new president Monday evening. Karen VanBrimmer, the senior councilwoman, was nominated by Michael Aylward and the nomination seconded by Chris Smith, and with the approval of the rest of the council, minus Carrol Nather who was absent, she will serve as president for the rest of the year.
HOISINGTON - Habitat for Humanity: Barton County Area began work on the property located at 322 E. 6th Street. Work days are being scheduled for the following dates: Aug 13, 20, 27, Sept. 3, 10. The organization was granted two lots in the city of Hoisington to help alleviate a shortage of housing that has concerned the community for several years. HUTCHINSON - Harold D. Dalton, 89, passed away Aug. 7, 2016, with his family by his side. He was born in Dickenson County to Carl and Letha (Poland) Dalton. He attended Chapman High School. After graduating high school, he joined the Army serving during World War II. After an Honorable Discharge from the Army, he met and on Oct. 13, 1947, married Mary (Johnson) Dalton. He was employed by KPL as a welder and later retired as a superintendent after 42 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking and gardening.

HOISINGTON- Clara Barton Hospital and the City of Hoisington learned it is one of eight communities in Kansas recently selected as a grantee in the largest community grant program ever funded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas.

HOISINGTON - Hoisington City Council members approved the purchase of a new 'jaws of life' extraction unit by the Hoisington Fire Department at the meeting Monday. Previously, Hoisington EMS was responsible for the extraction unit, but when the new ambulance arrived, EMS Director Scott Fleming realized there would not be room for the old unit on the new vehicle.
HOISINGTON - Monday night, after a study session concerning the 2017 budget, Hoisington City Council members recognized outgoing councilman Brian Wilborn , awarding a plaque for his service to the council. A Natural Resources Conservation Service administered grant program that pays for high-tunnels has been growing in popularity over the past few years, and that is increasing competition for the grants in some areas, said Barton County District Conservationist Ron Klein.
