Library law change has CKLS turning to commissioners

Thanks to the recent passage of HB 2102, which went into effect July 1, the governor will no longer be called on to appoint members to the state's seven library systems boards. That job will now fall to county commissioners around the state.

Movie in the Park and Special Summer Farmers Market Thursday night

Everyone is invited to attend a Special Farmers Market Thursday evening, at the Summer Street Stroll Farmers Market at Jack Kilby Square. Then, when the sun goes down, visitors are invited to attend "The Little Mermaid" Movie in the Park, which is part of Great Bend's Summer Street Stroll Thursday night lineup. Visitors and vendors alike are encouraged to dress in tropical wear, and tropical music will help set the mood.

GBPL Board to help fund Dolly Parton Imagination Library

When the Great Bend Public Library learned it was one of six community organizations to receive annual support from the Don and Phyllis Whelan Endowment Fund, the Board of Trustees began exploring ideas to carry out the wishes of the Whelans. Monday night, they made plans to begin spending the first installment of $6,769, presented to them in March by the Golden Belt Community Foundation.

Larned City Manager declares bankruptcy

LARNED - Mayor William Nusser spoke to The Great Bend Tribune on Monday, confirming the Larned City Council was aware of a bankruptcy filing last week by the new city manager, Bradley Eilts and his wife. The disclosed liabilities amounted to more than $387,000.

Beautiful day for a parade

ELLINWOOD - Early Saturday morning, residents of Ellinwood began trickling onto Main Street, setting out blankets and lawn chairs in preparation for a tradition 44 years in the making. One family even set up not one, but two pools in their front yard in order to cool off as temperatures began to become sultry.

Hoisington to revamp holiday decorations; Budget priorities set

HOISINGTON - Hoisington council member Karen Van Brimmer wanted to know more about a proposed upgrade to Hoisington's holiday star decorations. She asked for the item to be moved from the consent agenda to the regular agenda, opening a discussion that touched on the possibility of more volunteer involvement with the project.

Tax credits and more to HOI for new apartment development

Local non-profit housing developer, Housing Opportunitites, Inc., in June received word from the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation, Topeka, that it has been awarded $2,831,830 in tax credits. Then, last week, they received more good news. They were one of nine Community Houisng Development Organizations (CHDO) in Kansas to be awarded federal HOME Rental Development loans. In addition to the tax credits, HOI will also receive this additional $500,000 loan. HOI plans to use these awards to develop Kensington Square, its newest income-based rental property in Great Bend.

Fashion leads to fair with 2017 Revue

A precursor to the Barton County Fair each year is the 4-H Clothing, Fiber Arts & Fashion Revue. Wednesday morning, 4-Hers from area clubs arrived early at Trinity Lutheran Church to undergo judging for garment construction and buymanship outfits, and to get feedback on their workmanship in the fiber arts. Some of the top winners will go on to compete this fall at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson, said Barton County Extension Agent Bernie Unruh.

Hoisington upholds fireworks ordinance

HOISINGTON - Hoisington City Council members had two weeks to review the city's fireworks ordinance following a discussion at the June 12 meeting. When they met again Monday night, fireworks were once again on the agenda, and the council unanimously agreed to uphold the ordinance that allows the discharge of fireworks in the city on one day only, July 4, from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Building the dream

Last week, the Central Kansas Dream Center made significant progress on the renovation of the third floor of their building. A pump truck arrived and began pumping cement up a long hose, and workers began spreading and filling the floor to level it prior to framing new living spaces.

GBHS grad, Mull, making name in video

Aaron Mull, a 2012 Great Bend High School graduate, is beginning to make a name for himself in the world of internet video. This Wednesday night, June 29, a small clip of a 2013 video he made and posted will be shown on the MTV show "Catfish," for a special showcasing the makers' favorite parodies of their show.
