County hires county works director

Long-time Barton County Road and Bridge Director Dale Phillips retired at the end of June. On Monday, the County Commission appointed the man to take his place.

Commission renews agreement with county counselor

Renewing the contract with Ellsworth attorney Carey Hipp as Barton County's legal counselor was in the best interest of the county, the County Commissioner decided Monday morning. This came despite a plea from County Attorney Amy Mellor, who caught most on the commission off guard when she attended the meeting asking to move the counselor's job to her office and asking for more departmental resources.

Feds, state pony up for ice storm damage

Great Bend City Clerk Shawna Schafer has received a $113,543.75 check from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and a check from the State of Kansas in the amount of $13,393.59 for reimbursements for our clean-up work for the ice storm that happened in January, City Administrator Howard Partington told the City Council Wednesday night.

New county zoning regs complete

Barton County Environmental Manager Judy Goreham has completed the most recent update to the county Zoning Regulations Version II which included provisions for commercial solar facilities, commercial agricultural product storage facilities and a new definition for "structures," the County Commission was told Monday morning.

City to study management, pay at police department

Following an exhausting string of executive sessions totaling 2 hours and 45 minutes to discuss "personnel issues currently facing the city" Thursday night, the Great Bend City Council emerged and voted to proceed with hiring a law firm to conduct a management and compensation study of the Police Department.

With scores of massive white wind turbine components as a backdrop, officials cut the ceremonial ribbon for the Great Bend transload facility Thrusday afternoon. The site, located in the Great Bend Industrial park west of town, has been in use for a couple months now, but this just marked its grand opening.

Barton County personnel honored as Roads Scholars

Several Barton County Road and Bridge Department personnel were honored by the County Commission Monday morning for furthering their education. They received certificates marking their completion of the Kansas Association of Counties' Roads Scholar Program.

On a recent sultry Sunday afternoon, several young children, and their parents, availed themselves of the new splash pad water feature in the Barton County Courthouse Square. It was a scene of unbridled joy as the kids ran through the fountains and streams of cool water shooting from the floor.
