Thousands of people who own property in Barton County received a surprise in the mail recently after the Barton County Treasurer's Office mailed out tax warrants to those who owe back taxes.

Council rejects term limits

A charter ordinance setting term limits for the Great Bend mayor and City Council members failed to garner the required two-thirds council majority to pass Monday night. The proposal came at the suggestion of Councilman Brock McPherson.

Council votes to sponsor Cinco de Mayo

The Great Bend City Council Monday night approved a $500 sponsorship for Cinco De Mayo and approved a street closing for the event on May 5 at the request of organizer Jose Hernandez. Closed will be Main Street from 19th Street to Lakin Avenue from 11 a.m. to noon for the parade.

Domestic violence a community problem

A pair of proclamations approved by the Barton County Commission Monday morning call attention to the ongoing problem of domestic violence. They marked April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month and were requested by the Family Crisis Center.

Commission marks Autism Awareness Day

Noting that autism is a prevalent condition affecting people of all walks of life, the Barton County Commission Monday morning approved a joint proclamation with the City of Great Bend recognizing Monday as the 11th annual World Autism Awareness Day 2018. Great Bend Mayor Joe Andrasek signed the proclamation last week.

County burn ban lifted

Citing slightly damper conditions, the Barton County Commission Monday morning lifted the temporary county-wide burn ban at the request of fire chiefs across the county. Effective noon Monday, individuals could again burn with approval from the fire chief having jurisdiction of the area where the burning is to take place.

Hearing date set for fire district

The County Commission Monday morning approved a resolution setting a public hearing on the creation of a second fire district in Barton County. The proceeding will take place at 9 a.m. Monday, May 14, in the commission chambers.

HOISINGTON – Two-year-old Iviona Lewis, the Hoisington girl reported missing Tuesday afternoon, was been found dead in rural Barton County, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation reported Wednesday morning, adding that an arrest in the case had been made.
