Former Senator Dole to visit Great Bend

Former Kansas Senator Bob Dole is returning to his native Central Kansas for a series of informal public gatherings. Dole, a Russell native and two-time presidential candidate, will meet the public in Great Bend at 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, at the Best Western Angus Inn courtyard, 2920 10th St. in Great Bend.

Budget delays should be minimal

City and Sports Complex pitch another good game

In his bi-weekly update to the City Council Monday night, City Administrator Howard Partington said local tournament organizers did it again. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the landmark 1964 Wilderness Act, the conservation bill that enshrined our nation's most pristine wildlands for future generations. The 1964 Wilderness Act, written by The Wilderness Society's Howard Zahniser, created the National Wilderness Preservation System, which protects nearly 110 million acres of wilderness areas from coast to coast.

Auditors: Serious problems found in Treasurer’s Office

Barton County commissioners were enraged to learn Tuesday morning that shortcomings found by auditors in the beleaguered Treasurer's Office had still not been rectified, thus preventing Adams, Brown, Beran and Ball from conducting the 2013 audit and delaying the county's entire budget-planning process.

Boy, is it dry

"I do not know if everyone realizes how serious the drought situation is for Barton County and the State of Kansas," Barton County Emergency Manager Amy Miller said. She was responding to an announcement from Governor Sam Brownback's office last week updated the state's Drought Declaration for Kansas which now includes all 105 counties either in an emergency, warning or watch status.
