Cause of fire unknown

Local gas prices near state average
In the past week, the average retail gasoline prices in Kansas have risen 0.3 cents per gallon to an average of $3.26 per gallon as of Sunday. This compares with the national average that has fallen 2.1 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.42, according to gasoline price website KansasGasPrices.com.
State seeks NCLB waiver
The Kansas State Board of Education Tuesday afternoon voted to apply for a waiver, exempting the state from portions of the controversial 2001 No Child Left Behind law which requires students to meet federally mandated proficiency targets in reading and math.
Students get time off for good behavior
After much discussion, the Unified School District 428 School Board reluctantly approved Monday night giving the entire Great Bend High School student body a half day off, that is if the upcoming National Honor Society's food drive reaches its goal of collecting 8,000 items.

TOUTING TOURISM
It is fitting that Barton County celebrate Kansas Tourism Week this week, Great Bend Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Cris Collier told the County Commission Monday morning.
OF RISK AND REWARD
Three weeks ago, a fertilizer storage facility in West, Texas, not all that different from plants in many, small, rural communities, exploded. It killed 14 people, leveled much of the tiny town and rocked the nation.
Come on guys, keep those doors open
Sunshine Week, the national initiative by journalists to assure that sunshine illuminates every crevasse in the halls of officialdom, runs March 10-16. During that week, newspapers traditionally run editorials and columns extolling the importance of open government as it relates to our freedoms as Americans.
A two-way trail
