Sunday liquor sales in GB now legal

It is now legal to sell and purchase liquor and cereal malt beverages seven days a week within the City of Great Bend following action by the City Council Monday night.

Commission holds another executive session

After an hour-long executive session Monday morning, the Barton County Commission emerged only to announce no action would result from the closed-door meeting. It was called to discuss an investigation involving non-elected personnel and in with commissioners were County Clerk Donna Zimmerman and Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

County tax sale successful

The annual Barton County Tax Sale was held on Oct. 11 at the courthouse. Of the 24 parcels on the auction block, 23 sold, County Treasurer Kevin Wondra told the County Commission Monday morning.

Dedication set for second memorial stone

Two weeks ago, the second engraved with the names of veterans with ties to Barton County was set in place at the Golden Belt Veterans Memorial. Tuesday, plans for the official dedication on Veterans Day, Nov. 11 were announced.

County tax sale Tuesday

The annual Barton County Tax Sale will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday in the Conference Room of the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main St. in Great Bend. Commissioner Kenny Schremmer will conduct the auction. Parcels can be viewed on-line at www.bartoncounty.org.

Commission alarmed by domestic violence stats

On Oct. 20, Family Crisis Center Executive Director Rachel Angel wants Barton County residents to "paint the town purple" in an effort to draw attention to domestic violence, which is as serious of a problem locally as it is elsewhere in the state and nation.

Commissioner Alicia Straub's asking for a 10-minute closed-door commission meeting Monday morning sparked a heated exchange after fellow commissioners felt blind-sided by the request. Straub sought the executive session as an addition to the agenda to continue discussions around an investigation involving non-elected county personnel.
