New vehicle, bike signs on the way

Barton County Engineer Clark Rusco has been working with the engineers on the High Risk Rural Road project to replace regulatory and warning signs on several roadway corridors in the county, including the installation of several new bicycle signs, County Administrator Richard Boeckman told the County Commission Monday morning.

ROADS OF GLASS

The Barton County Road and Bridge Department has begun testing the inclusion of finely ground glass in the asphalt it uses to pave rural black-tops, Road and Bridge Director Dale Phillips said.

Tax distributions still not complete

The Barton County Commission Monday morning learned that the property tax distributions that were due out by Sept. 20 from the County Treasurer's Office have yet to me made. In addition, there are still tax abatements and refunds that have not been cleared up either.

The Kansas Department of Agriculture has added a new interactive map to its website. This map breaks down statistics and shows the impact each county has on the total state economy. The map allows users to see detailed agricultural statistics including farm numbers, leading agricultural sectors and value-added data.

County tax sale set for Tuesday

The annual Barton County tax sale takes place at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Conference Room of the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. Commission Chairman Kenny Schremmer will conduct the auction.

Buildings declared ‘unsafe and dangerous’

The Great Bend City Council Monday night adopted a resolution setting 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7 as the dates for a pubic hearings for the unsafe and dangerous structure at 1318 Kansas Ave., owned by Trent Mermis, and 1324 Kansas Avenue, owned by Norma Ward.

The last B-29 hangar to be razed

The last of the World War II B-29 hangers at the Great Bend Municipal Airport has been near collapse for several years, and the recent storm just made things worse. Noting that it is a shame to see the landmark go, the Great Bend City Council Monday night authorized Stone Sand Company to raze the beleaguered historic structure.

End of an era

It is an unfortunate coincidence that came only a couple weeks after the tremendous success of the Great Bend Airfest, an event celebrating the communities rich World War II heritage. The Great Bend City Council Monday night discussed the fate of last of the remaining WW II B-29 hangars at the Great Bend Municipal Airport.

ETERNALLY ON GUARD

In November, the Barton County Historical Society will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the dedication of "The Rifleman," the original bronze statue by noted American sculptor Frederick C. Hibbard. To the north of the Barton County Courthouse, this likeness of a young man about 19 years of age stands eternal guard in defense of the Union, rifle and bayonet at the ready.

Soon, Great Bend firefighters will be making their annual rounds to local grade schools. They will show the kids firefighters are not to be feared and remind them how to be safe when fire strikes.

Last hazardous waste collection dates coming

In all, Barton County Solid Waste Director Phil Hathcock said 52 participants dropped off 258 pounds of household hazardous waste at the Sept. 19 collection at the Barton County Landfill. In addition, 3,400 pounds of E-Waste was recycled during the reporting period.
