Vicious dog recommendations sharpened

Low bid questioned

The Barton County Commission Monday morning voted to award Bridges Inc., a Newton-based company, the contract to make much-needed repairs to the Arkansas River bridge south of Ellinwood. Replaced will be the expansion joints which allow the bridge deck to expand and contract with the changes in temperature. The joints rusted and are stuck in the expanded position.

Pit bull ban not option for committee

A week ago this past Monday, a 4-year-old Hoisington boy was mauled by a pit bull that jumped a fence into the boy's yard. This attack served as backdrop for Wednesday night's meeting of the City of Great Bend committee charged with studying banning or more severely regulating vicious dogs.

A 'fair' time for all

The latest installment of the Barton County Fair begins Wednesday. This is annual tradition provides a venue for youth and adults from across the county to show off their talents and be get a little pat on the back for their efforts. It is also a time for the community to come together for a week of family entertainment. Speed limit set on Second Street

Second Street from McKinley to Truman is technically a county road with the residents residing in the subdivision north of it living outside the Great Bend City Limits. However, south of the dirt thoroughfare is the new city-owned Sports Complex which draws a lot of traffic to the area.

Although not seen in Barton County, rabies cases rise in Kansas

The Kansas Department of Agriculture's Division of Animal Health is reporting an increased number of rabies cases in Kansas this year, but the disease has yet to show up in Barton County, Barton County Extension Agent Alicia Boor said.
