Hearing could decide old opera house’s fate

Early in the morning on Dec. 18, a large chunk of the back southwest corner of the old opera house building at 2103 Forest tumbled to the ground. Later in the day, it declared the structure unsafe to occupy, forcing the renters, Euphoria Dance Studio and an apartment tenant, to move.

A taxing issue

At its meeting Monday night, the Great Bend City Council considered a resolution to ask voters in the upcoming April election if they want to continue the one half-cent city sales tax. The tax first approved by constituents in 2000, will sunset as of April 1, 2015.

More than sports

The fourth-ranked Wichita State University Shockers men's basketball team, which beat Drake over the weekend to run its record to 21-0, has become a marquee opponent on everybody's schedule. Along with top-ranked Arizona and No. 2 Syracuse, the Shockers are among three unbeaten teams left in men's Division I basketball. Considering the weakened state of the Missouri Valley Conference and the schedule they still have left, there's a good chance Wichita State will become the first team to enter the NCAA tournament with an unblemished record since UNLV in 1991.
