HOISINGTON - In a joint meeting of the USD 431 school board and the Hoisington City Council, Christina Hayes, prevention consultant for the Regional Prevention Center of NWKS, presented data to the boards and approximately 60 patrons on the Communities that Care survey data which shows that Barton County teens have higher than state averages in alcohol use and cigarette use.
HOISINGTON - The Hoisington School Board has added a new one-half credit requirement for students graduating in 2014. The class will be Nutrition and Wellness.

CHEYENNE BOTTOMS - The annual National Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count was held in December, and the results showed that the 95 species of birds were present at Cheyenne Bottoms this winter. The numbers were up.
HOISINGTON - After being the Plant Manager of Superior Essex in Hoisington for 24 years and 8 months, Brent Rensch is retiring and plans to spend his days doing a lot of hunting, fishing, golfing and traveling. He will stay in the area.

GREAT BEND - The Kansas Department of Transportation recently met in Great Bend with members of the local Wetlands and Wildlife National Scenic Byway committee to present the unified marketing plan for all of the byways in the state.

HOISINGTON - To promote awareness of the Barton County-wide teen binge drinking problem, the Hoisington City Council and USD 431 will have a joint meeting on Jan. 3, 2011 at the Hoisington Activity Center. The state-wide Communities That Care survey showed that Barton County is higher than state average in binge drinking and liquor during the last 30 days.
HOISINGTON - With a great ability to connect with teenagers, motivational speaker Mike Donahue spoke to Hoisington High School students on Monday and urged the students to stop self-medicating with alcohol, drugs and negative behavior, and to begin treating the pain underneath the mask.

In the mid-20th century, the tiny bed bugs that punch a big punch basically disappeared from first world countries with the use of such chemicals as DDT. The problem began again in 1995 with worldwide travel becoming increasingly common, and use of insecticides with reduced residual activity, all probably played a role in the resurgence.
