BARTON COUNTY - The Barton County Communities That Care data has been released for 2011-12 school year, showing that work remains in the areas of alcohol use by area teens.
HOISINGTON - Hoisington Main Street in the downtown area and out to the Rotomix plant will be undergoing construction this summer to replace aging water lines. The brick in the parking areas will be replaced with concrete on Main Street, from Third Street to First Street, the City Council decided on Tuesday at its regular meeting.

HOISINGTON - Engines will once again roar as adults try their hands at running a truck through the mud at the third annual Mud Run at 1 p.m. on June 2 in Hoisington in conjunction with the Kansas Mud Racing Organization. The cost is $5 with children 5 and under free. There will be concessions and a beer garden.
The American Legion of Kansas held its 94th annual convention in Great Bend this weekend in conjunction with the 92nd American Legion Auxiliary, and the Sons of the American Legion. The convention alternates each year between Topeka and Great Bend.
PAWNEE ROCK - On May 28, the city of Pawnee Rock will celebrate 125 years, beginning the day with a parade at 10 a.m. An event button will be for sale for $3 with different historic scenes. Activities are free with the button.
ELLINWOOD - A man that honorably served his country during Korea and paid with his life, Thomas Edward Cooney, will be remembered this Memorial Day with a flag folding and rededication of the war dead memorial at the Ellinwood American Legion. Cooney's name has been added to the memorial.

With that in mind, the Hoisington School District is working towards an entrepreneurship project that will provide tools for students, including time management, accountability, responsibility, and hands-on employee skills.
USD 431 School Board, decided at a special meeting on Monday, to proceed with an entrepreneurship program similar to the Stafford Entrepreneurship and Economic Development Program (SEED).

HOISINGTON - Walking or riding a bike is a healthy, wholesome activity, and students walking to and from school gives kids great outdoor exercise. USD 431 Hoisington School District has received two grants for a Walking School Bus that begins this fall, from Oct. 1-Nov. 14. A Walking School Bus, where a parent volunteers walk with the kids to school, is one of the latest initiatives to get kids outside and combat obesity.
HOISINGTON - Lincoln School in Hoisington was built in the 1920s and needs to be updated for changing technology and standards. With this in mind, consultant Kent Stewart was contracted by the USD 431 school district to study the facilities in Hoisington.
