ELLINWOOD - Ellinwood Grade School was awarded a Certificate of Recognition in the Challenge Award Program from the Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force. This award recognizes the EGS third grade for outstanding achievement and uncommon accomplishments based on Kansas Assessment results from 2011 and other qualifying factors.
BARTON COUNTY - Ellinwood and Hoisington both have several positions on the city council open in the April 3 election. The deadline to file was Tuesday, Jan. 24 at noon.

HOISINGTON - The city of Hoisington received very good news for the community when 6.7 acres of land were donated for residential development to its land bank, the Hoisington City Council learned at its recent meeting.
ELLINWOOD - The City of Ellinwood will purchase property at 511 E. Santa Fe to provide additional storage of city equipment, the Ellinwood City Council decided at its meeting on Tuesday. An open-front shed will be built on the property which is located east of the city shop.
CLAFLIN - Claflin High School and Claflin Elementary School have both received the Governor's Achievement Awards for the 2010-11 school year, and Ellinwood's St. Joseph School have also received the award.
ELLINWOOD - The school district has made some video improvements to the gym to showcase student athletes, the Ellinwood School Board heard at its regular meeting. These improvements will be unveiled during the game with Hoisington Friday evening.
HOISINGTON - The Hoisington City Council, at its regular meeting on Monday, approved a resolution to put on the November ballot a raise in retail sales tax of .25 of one percent for the community. This increase will put the city at the same increment as the city of Great Bend.

HOISINGTON - At the Hoisington City Council meeting on Monday, several landlords were present, upset about the rental licensing agreement just passed by the council. The Great Bend Tribune featured a story on the program on July 6. The rental agreement requires minimum standards for rental housing and rental inspection.
