Levee erosion could cost Great Bend plenty

Local officials are being encouraged to "work with" ATV riders in their recreational use of the local flood control levee system, but they were also warned that if damage to the levees continues unabated, it could end up costing many local residents - and costing them a lot, whether they enjoy ATV riding or not.

Habitat for Humanity auction rescheduled due to weather

A land auction for Habitat for Humanity of Barton County, scheduled for Tuesday evening, was rescheduled because of the unsafe weather conditions. Habitat co-chairman Rachel Mawhirter said the auction will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, in the board room of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce & Economic Development, 1125 Williams. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

KAYs Club hosts fund raiser, food drive

HOISINGTON - Earlier this month, the Hoisington High School KAY Club held a "Can a Teacher Day." Each class brought canned goods to fill in a space the size of a classroom door. If the class brought in enough canned goods to completely fill the area, they were allowed to "can" the teacher and skip their class for the day. Each class selected a teacher who agreed to the terms. The following classes chose these teachers: senior class, Mike Richter; junior class, Carrie Fiest; sophomore class, Bruce Cooper; and the freshman class, London Reif.
