Unlike painting and drawing, which are quickly associated with art, quilting is associated with warmth and comfort. The Shafer Gallery at Barton Community College will show the community that it is also an incredible art form with the amazing quilts featured in its upcoming exhibit.

"I've done enough county fairs to realize you are lucky to find just one animal like these, but to have this many in a county fair is tremendous," said 2016 Barton County Fair 4-H Sheep judge, John Herbel, of Lucas. "My thanks to the competitors because it makes it a lot more enjoyable to judge a competition like this."
On Tuesday, July 5, members of the Galatia City Council met to finish sorting out how the Northern Barton County city will move forward with water sales to farmers and industry after one farmer was denied a request to purchase water for spraying his crops in May.
HUTCHINSON – After trading controversial television commercials, polite conversation and friendly exchanges highlighted the debate between Great Bend's Dr. Roger Marshall and Congressman Tim Huelskamp, Hutchinson for a near capacity crowd.
The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes the purchase of electronic voting books, a Mental Health Awareness Month proclamation and an upgrade of office lighting for the Register of Deeds Office.
Hoisington City Council members considered options of what to do with the restroom structure at Pride Park two weeks ago. They either needed to be razed or refurbished, after a proposed Eagle Scout project fell through. The council asked City Manager Jonathan Mitchell to approach the Commission on Aging, the group that operates the Friendship House located at the park, about a solution. Monday night, Mitchell reported back to the council.
About 35 Great Bend High School students stood across the street from the front entrance of their school around 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. They were continuing a protest that began on Monday afternoon following a press conference held by the Unified School District 428 administration at the district office.
Prior to the Hoisington City Council meeting Monday night, council members arrived early to inspect and compare the merits of three different ambulances that the EMS Director Scott Fleming arranged to have available. They included one owned by the City of Hoisington, a 2013 Osage provided by Great Bend EMS, and a 2015 AEM. Fleming is also considering a model by Lifeline, but was unable to have one available Monday night for the inspection.
An official from NASA will be the keynote speaker at the 12th annual Jack Kilby Science Day. The public is invited to attend as Raphael Grau, acting manager of external integration for the International Space Station Program, addresses area high school students. His talk will be at 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, in the Fine Arts Building at Barton Community College.
Barton Community College will host an opening reception for its new exhibit "Fire," by Cheyenne artist Bently Spang, from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9 in the Shafer Art Gallery. The exhibit will run through Nov. 6.
