Sobbas named Rotary Clubs 2012 Distinguished Citizens

ELLINWOOD -Leon and Linda Sobba, longtime Ellinwood residents, were named the Ellinwood Rotary Club's 2012 Distinguished Citizens at the club's annual banquet. In addition, the club is celebrating its 75th anniversary, beginning on Dec. 1, 1936.

Perfect Panthers crowned

The Great Bend High School Kayettes held their 2012 Mr. Perfect Panther pageant Saturday, Feb. 11, at the GBHS auditorium. This year's Mr. Perfect Panter was Aaron Mull and Mr. Almost Perfect was Matt Moyd.

Next hearing scheduled in Longoria trial

Adam Longoria will return to Great Bend at least once more before his capital murder trial, which is scheduled to start March 26. A hearing to deal with pretrial motions has been scheduled for 9 a.m. on March 1 in Barton County District Court.

Great Bend Rec earns state kudos

Administrators from the Great Bend Recreation Commission received statewide recognition at the Kansas Recreation & Park Association's annual conference, held Jan. 24-27 at Topeka. Program Coordinator Garet Fitzpatrick received the Distinguished Recreation Programmer award, and Executive Director Diann Henderson received the Distinguished Professional Award. GBRC Program Coordinator Chris Umphres presented the award to Henderson.

Since testimony began Tuesday, the jury in the trial of LaVeta Miller has heard from several witnesses and Barton County Douglas Mathews has introduced more than 100 pieces of evidence. Defense attorney Robert Anderson has introduced more than 40 pieces of evidence, and cross-examined each witness.

Miller takes the witness stand

After the state presented its final witness Thursday in Barton County District Court, defendant LaVeta Miller stepped to the witness stand to testify. Charged with two counts of theft by deception, the Great Bend woman began to explain her work as former director of Central Prairie RC&D and its most prominent program, Central Prairie Honor Flights.

USD 431 calls for bond election

At the Monday, March 2 meeting of the USD 431 Board of Education meeting, members approved a resolution calling for a bond election in hopes of gain approval to issue a General Obligation Bond to fund the building of a new school building for Lincoln Elementary School and to upgrade security and other systems at the district's other three buildings.

​KBI agent testifies Miller deposited checks for fictitious invoices

Kansas Bureau of Investigation Agent Clint Hawkins said checks that Central Prairie Honor Flights members thought were written to businesses wound up instead in the banking account of the nonprofit organization's director, LaVeta Miller. Hawkins testified Wednesday in Barton County District Court, where Miller is on trial for two counts of theft by deception, each greater than $25,000 but less than $100,000.

Pertussis case confirmed at GBHS

Wednesday afternoon, USD 428 sent an email letter to parents informing them that a chase of Pertussis (whooping cough) had been confirmed at the high school. The letter warned of the symptoms and what parents need to do if they suspect their child is infected.
