Senators mark 40th anniversary of Cancer Act

BCC’s inmate education program receives grant extension through August 2012

Since 2009, almost 700 incarcerated youth and adults have had the opportunity to pursue a higher education through Barton Community College's grant funded Reach Out, Retrain and Re-entry (R3) project. This number shattered the project's initial goal of 250 participants, and with a recent government grant extension, many more will have the same opportunities, according to Elaine Simmons, BCC's dean of Workforce Training and Community Education.

College sticks with local dealerships

Barton Community College's Board of Trustees voted Tuesday to buy from local car dealerships, even though a Topeka dealership submitted lower bids on replacement vehicles. The total cost will be $116,786.10 for one three-quarter ton 4 x4 Chevrolet truck and two Chevy Impalas from Dove Chevrolet Buick Cadillac, and three Ford Fusions from Marmie Ford.

Local partnership receives healthy community grant

A collaboration between the Central Kansas Partnership and the Golden Belt Community Foundation has netted a $25,000 planning grant from the Kansas Health Foundation's Healthy Community Design initiative. Barton County is one of only seven communities in the state to receive this funding.
