Barton County state’s only meth disposal site
For years, the State of Kansas, through the Kansas Department of Health and Environment's Bureau of Waste Management, operated three facilities for the storage of methamphetamine-related materials. Weather forces Service Day postponement
Due to the winter-like weather, organizers decided Tuesday to postpone the first-ever Great Bend High School Community Service Day that was scheduled for today. The new date is Wednesday, May 1.

HUTCHINSON - Honor Flights are still going on in Kansas, and 27 World War II veterans will be headed to Washington, D.C., Wednesday morning. A Ness County tire recycling company is one step closer to opening a facility near the Great Bend Municipal Airport after the Barton County Commission Monday morning agreed that the firm's plan meets the county's Solid Waste Management Plan.
Police investigate widespread vandalism
Several vehicles in various parts of Great Bend had windows broken over the weekend. In most cases, police reports show they were shot with BB guns or pellet guns, according to Lt. Bill Browne at the Great Bend Police Department. There were also reports of broken windows on buildings, and other damage, including a vehicle at 2607 Forest Ave. that was keyed on Friday.

Fundraiser gives CAC a boost
Saturday morning, Applebees parking lot began to fill at 8 a.m. when winners of a silent auction held over the past few weeks arrived to pick up their treasures. Sarah Schenek , director of the Children's Advocacy Center, said the non-profit stands to receive around $12,000, at least three times as much as they anticipated when they learned they'd been chosen by Applebees as the local charity of choice.

Garden tour replanted
After a one-year hiatus, the once annual Gardens Galore garden tour will return Sunday, June 2. Only now, it is a project of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Beautification Committee. It had been sponsored by the local Soroptimist International, but it has since disbanded.

Nine head coaching contracts were renewed Wednesday when the Barton Community College Board of Trustees met, but the contracts of two head coaches are "pending final review." The board discussed personnel matters behind closed doors for nearly an hour before voting on head coach contracts, administrative contracts and contracts for managerial staff. Bridge work to cause traffic delays
