HOISINGTON - Although the temperature hovered around the century mark on Saturday, children and adults both climbed eagerly into trucks, honking horns and spinning steering wheels to see vehicles they had not seen before. It was all a part of the Hoisington Labor Day weekend celebration on Saturday.
The Kansas Division of Emergency Management will hold a preliminary damage assessment at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Room 101 at the Barton County Courthouse in Great Bend to gather information on damages sustained during the flooding and severe weather July 22-Aug. 16, said Amy Miller, Barton County emergency management director.
Between now and the opening of pheasant and quail season in November, hundreds of Kansas youths will enroll in Kansas Hunter Education courses. Locally, the classes are almost always filled, says Garet Fitzpatrick, coordinator of leisure programs at the Great Bend Recreation Commission.

The swimmers are gone and the water has been drained from Great Bend's Wetlands Aquatic Facility, so firefighters took the opportunity Wednesday to do some confined-space training at the city water park.

TOPEKA – Extreme drought conditions continue for western Kansas while central and eastern counties see improvement. This has led Governor Sam Brownback to update the Drought Declaration for Kansas counties with an Executive Order 13-02 today. For the first time since July 2012 conditions have improved enough to remove or decrease the emergency drought status for some Kansas counties.
