Zoo Society gets wild

Membership has its privileges, at least for those who join the Great Bend Zoological Society. Those who join not only support work going on at the Brit Spaugh Zoo, but they can take part in members-only programs and behind-the-scenes zoo tours, said Robin Fabricius, secretary of the zoo society's board of directors. Study session will address flood levee damage

City officials took it seriously when a federal representative told them earlier this year that continued damage to the flood control dike system here could lead to significant losses for local property owners. They took the news seriously enough that city staff have formed three study committees and preparations are being made for a special study session when that information will be brought to elected officials, the Great Bend City Council was told Monday night.

Great Bend man faces charges of child porn

WICHITA - A Great Bend man appeared in federal court in Wichita Monday on charges of producing child pornography, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said. Shawn Marshal Christiansen, 36, was charged with one count of producing child pornography and one count of possessing child pornography. The crimes are alleged to have occurred from April 27, 2009, to Jan. 8, 2010, in Great Bend. The indictment alleges Christiansen used a Web camera ...

Reminiscent of wild west; 150th anniversary cattle drive to be held

ELLINWOOD - The old Ellsworth Cox Cattle Trail from Caldwell, Okla. to Ellsworth, long abandoned and disused, will once again come alive from Sept. 3 to Sept. 19 as 400 thronging head of long horn cattle will be driven 200 miles to Ellsworth for the 150th Anniversary of Kansas' birthday.
