On April 26, Barton County Emergency Management received notice that President Barack Obama signed a federal disaster declaration which ordered aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area affected by the Feb. 20-23 blizzard, including Barton and surrounding counties, the Barton County Commission learned Monday morning.
SALINE COUNTY – Great Bend Fire Department firefighters are among more than 230 emergency personnel from across Kansas taking part in an intensive a two-day, large-scale training exercise that wraps up today in Saline County. First responders, emergency managers and other members of the public safety professions were invited to participate in and observe the exercise and tour the state-owned Crisis City training facility.
Tuesday night, Great Bend experienced wind gusts of up to 52 mph, according to the National Weather Service. According to USD 428 assistant superintendent Dan Brungardt, the Great Bend Police Department notified district administration that a tree had blown over into another tree. They expressed concern that if the wind shifted or the other tree gave way, at least part of the original tree would fall into the Washington School building.
Last week, we ran part one of a series on aging out of foster care. We were introduced to Daniel Martin, a foster alumnus who now works with other fosters in an independent living program in Wichita. His generation of fosters is working to change the system to ensure future fosters are empowered and have a more successful outcome. But it will take a lot of work to turn the system around. The second-annual K-96 June Jaunt is coming this weekend, offering arts, entertainment, cuisine and culture along the 176-mile long stretch of the highway winding from Tribune to Ellinwood. It runs Friday through Sunday.
Great Bend police received reports of criminal damage to property at two locations on Saturday morning. Someone threw paint on the side of the house at 1208 Morphy St., and someone spray painted the Funtime Bingo building at 2805 Ninth St.
A 20-year-old man told Great Bend police he was battered by someone carrying a knife, around 9:46 p.m. Friday in the area of 19th and Holland St. He did not know the subject. An aggravated battery case was taken.
St. Mark Lutheran Church in Great Bend will accept out-dated and broken electronic items for recycling from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 30. The church is located at 21st and Jackson St. This project is being done in cooperation with the Barton County Landfill, which also accepts "e-waste."
Prairie Godmothers – the local organization of women helping women – held a Build-A-Bag Brunch on Friday and members filled more than 100 gift bags that will be distributed to single mothers in the coming weeks.
Although the drums, bugles and color guard equipment have been put away long ago, the strong friendships and shared memories remain. Great Bend and Barton County's Argonne Rebels alumni, friends and supporters will gather on July 11, for a reunion in Great Bend.
