Who will kiss a farm animal?

People with some "loose change" are invited to place it in one of six jars at the Barton County Fair. The jars show the faces of members of the Fair Board, Fair Friends and 4-H. The one who gets the most money will kiss a farm animal.

New BCC trustee joins budget study

Leonard Bunselmeyer was sworn in Thursday as the newest member of the Barton Community College Board of Trustees. County Clerk Donna Zimmerman administered the oath of office for Bunselmeyer and re-elected trustees Don Learned and John Moshier at the beginning of a study session that included news about next year's budget.

First week of July turns tragic

TOPEKA – Each year, millions of people enjoy spending time at Kansas lakes and rivers and return home with happy memories to share with others. Sadly, outdoor fun turned fatal for five people who drowned in Kansas waters the first week of July – including four who perished over the extended July 4 holiday, one of whom was a Hoisington man, according to Maj. Dan Hesket, boating law administrator for the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism.

Berny Unruh was a shoe-in at the Red Shoe Kick, Wednesday at the Barton County Fair. The Barton County K-State Extension agent suggested the friendly game for the 4-H Youth Rally on the official opening day of the fair.

Pit bull ban not option for committee

A week ago this past Monday, a 4-year-old Hoisington boy was mauled by a pit bull that jumped a fence into the boy's yard. This attack served as backdrop for Wednesday night's meeting of the City of Great Bend committee charged with studying banning or more severely regulating vicious dogs.

Update on June dog rescue

In June, 50 dogs and puppies were rescued from a Great Bend home, and the good news is that 11 have been adopted, and 24 were transported to an Unleashed Pets Rescue Adoption in Mission.
