Whooping cranes spied at Cheyenne Bottoms

Whooping Crane fall migration is here in central Kansas. Each year during late October and early November, the endangered birds can be seen at Quivira National Wildlife Refuge and Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area, and in marshes and crop fields around the region. At Quivira, the best areas to look for them are at the south end of Little Salt Marsh (where there is an Observation Tower from which to scan the marsh) and the west side of Big Salt Marsh.

County approves tower project

County officials moved ahead this week on plans to improve county emergency communications. The Barton County Commission approved $3,550 for Hayden Tower Service to install radio equipment and cables on a Kansas Department of Transportation tower in the north part of Barton County. Great Bend debate team places third at Bishop Carroll

On Saturday, Oct. 16, the Great Bend high school debate team traveled to Bishop Carroll High School, Wichita, and tied for third overall in sweepstakes with Moundridge. There were 22 other schools at the tournament. Moundridge and Great Bend both had 11 wins and four losses on the school's total win-loss record. The tie was broken by the school's opposition record.

RSVP selling flowers for Memorial Day
