Hurricane Sandy causes severe damage in rural Haiti

ELLINWOOD - Hurricane Sandy has caused severe damage to nine communities in Haiti where Star of Hope has projects. Torrential rain fell for more than 24 hours resulting in flash flooding, landslides and rivers overflowing their banks. Reports of impassable roads, loss of crops and livestock are widespread throughout rural Haiti.

Correcton to Explore Great Bend story

On Thursday, Oct. 25, in the story "Get out and Explore Great Bend in November", the amount of the cash raffle referred to was incorrectly listed as a $12,000 cash giveaway. The correct reference is " a raffle for a cash giveaway." This should not be confused with the $12,000 cash giveaway campaign currently promoted by Great Bend's Eagle radio.

Police: $100,00 stolen from RC&D; director arrested

The director of Central Prairie RC&D was arrested Thursday on a warrant for two counts of theft by deception. LaVeta Miller was booked into the Barton County Jail in lieu of a $20,000 cash or surety bond.

Extension council elections planned

The Barton County Extension Council will hold elections to fill positions on program development committees Monday, Oct. 29, at the Barton County Extension Office at 1800 12th Street. Election time is 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. Any Barton County resident who is at least 18 years of age may vote in this election.

Black-out benefits United Way

The Great Bend High School Kayettes sponsored a "black-out" for United Way of Central Kansas during the mist-soaked Oct. 12 football game against arch rival Hays at GBHS's Memorial Stadium. The event generated $5,094, said UWCK Executive Director Julie Bugner-Smith.

Becoming ‘Organ Wise’

First grade students at Eisenhower Elementary School ended the day Friday in a special assembly courtesy of Barton County Extension Agents Bernie Unruh and Donna Krug.
