It's not every day that someone can see something first hand that was signed by George Washington, but through the month of February patrons of Barton Community College's Shafer Art Gallery can see not only Washington's signature, but those of other famous historical figures such as Martin Van Buren and Zachary Taylor.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Nominations for the 55th Annual Grammy Awards were announced in December and the Kansas City Chorale, under the direction of Artistic Director Charles Bruffy, has been nominated for two of the honors Awards for its recording: Life & Breath: Choral Works by René Clausen.
The USD Board of Education heard a proposal by the GBHS student council Tuesday at the monthly noon meeting at Jefferson Elementary School. Representatives from the Great Bend High School student council asked for approval for an all-student community service project. The students hope to organize the student body to take on several cleaning and maintenance projects at the school and around town from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24. "The aim of the project is to foster a sense of community responsibility and giving back," said senior class president Chon Chavez.

It was one of several town hall meetings organized by Huelskamp staffers taking place during a brief congressional break.
Trustees at Barton Community College approved new parking lot construction and a major software purchase when they met Monday. They gave tentative approval to a new lease agreement for an expanded facility at Grandview Plaza.
The Barton County Local Emergency Planning Committee will meet at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at the Barton County Courthouse. The agenda will include discussion on Severe Weather Awareness Week 2013, Regional Mitigation Plans, and a presentation on Public Assistance at the Local Level by Steve Harsha, public assistance officer for the Kansas Division of Emergency Management.
Baseball and softball practices have started, members of the Great Bend Recreation Commission's board of directors were told Monday. The board meeting included pay raises for full-time employees and discussion on a master plan for the playground at the Great Bend Activity Center.
Great Bend police received reports of criminal damage to property at two locations on Saturday morning. Someone threw paint on the side of the house at 1208 Morphy St., and someone spray painted the Funtime Bingo building at 2805 Ninth St.
A 20-year-old man told Great Bend police he was battered by someone carrying a knife, around 9:46 p.m. Friday in the area of 19th and Holland St. He did not know the subject. An aggravated battery case was taken.
